![]() | Faculty Scholarship 2008-2009 Dr. Meredith Allison received her B.A.H. degree from Queen’s University in Psychology, and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Victoria in Psychology. Her current academic interests include social psychology, law and psychology, and personality. Her research interests include eyewitnesses’ confidence in their lineup decisions, the use of narrative in eyewitness testimony, jurors’ perceptions of criminal suspects, alibi believability, and jurors’ understanding of judicial instructions. Dr. Alexa Darby received her B.A. degree from North Central College in Psychology and her M.A. degree from University of Connecticut in Adults with Learning Disabilities and her Ph.D. from University of Georgia in Educational Psychology and Qualitative Methods. Her current academic interests include educational psychology, psychology of exceptionality, emotions and research methods. Her research interests include teachers’ emotions, emotions in service learning, motivation in service learning, teaching qualitative methods and adults with disabilities in professional school settings. Kimberly Epting received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in Psychology and her Ph.D. from Auburn University in Experimental Psychology. Her current academic interests include learning, cognition, language, motivation, and research methods. Her current research focuses on self-editing behavior in writing and speech, the connection between language and thought, and the scholarship of teaching. Contact Dr. Epting. Dr. Paul M. Fromson received his B.S. degree from Amherst College in Psychology and English and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University in Clinical-Developmental Psychology. After a period of clinical practice, he came to Elon in 1986. His current academic interests include personality, self psychology, abnormal behavior, and the emotions. His research interests focus on the moral emotions (shame, guilt, esteem, and regret) and self-regulated choice. Contact Dr. Fromson. Dr. Mathew H. Gendle received a B.S. from Hobart College in biology and psychology. He received his Ph.D. in biopsychology from Cornell University. His academic interests include biological psychology, neuropsychology and neuropharmacology. Dr. Gendle conducts research on issues related to neurotoxicology, alterations in executive functions, consciousness and neuropsychological assessment. Contact Dr. Gendle. Dr. Thomas D. Green received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from East Tennessee State University in Experimental Psychology and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Nebraska in Experimental Psychology with emphasis in cognitive psychology and quantitative methods. His academic interests include cognitive psychology, research methods and statistics. His research interests include implicit learning, text comprehension and symbolic rehearsal. Contact Dr. Green. Dr. Catherine King received B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Psychology from the University of California at San Diego and an M.A. in Learning Disabilities from Northwestern University. Since 1993 Dr. King has been teaching classes at Elon in general, developmental, and educational psychology. Since 2008 she has been the Associate Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. Her research interests include vulnerability and resilience across the lifespan; the development of critical thinking and epistemological beliefs; and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Dr. Christopher Leupold received his B.A. in psychology from the University of Notre Dame, his M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Wayne State University. In addition, he spent over ten years in the consulting and corporate arenas, where he worked with various Fortune 500 companies including Ford Motor Company, The Home Depot, Pharmacia, Daimler Chrysler, LensCrafters, Kmart, Visteon and American Greetings. His primary consulting expertise is in leadership development, executive coaching and succession planning, although he also engages in a wide array of other organizational development activities. His current academic interests include statistics, research methods and the psychology of organizations and the workplace. His current research interests include leadership development, organizational citizenship behavior and performance evaluation. Contact Dr. Leupold. Dr. Maurice J. Levesque received his B.A. from Bates College in History and Psychology and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Connecticut in Social Psychology. His academic interests include social psychology, interpersonal relationships, statistics and research methods, and the psychology of aging. Currently, he is conducting research on the accuracy of interpersonal perceptions (How well do we know others?) and meta-perceptions (How well do we know what others think about us?), and male body image concerns, including the connections among body image satisfaction, self-esteem and social behavior. Contact Dr. Levesque. Dr. Duane McClearn received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado in Boulder. His primary area of training was biological psychology. His current academic interests include biological psychology, animal behavior, social psychology and criminal behavior. Dr. Amy Overman received a B.S. in Neuroscience from Allegheny College. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition in cognitive psychology with a specialization in cognitive neuroscience. Her academic interests include biological psychology, cognitive neuroscience, memory, research methods, and biological and cognitive aging. Dr. Overman's current research uses behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) techniques to examine brain and cognition differences in young adults and older adults, particularly age-related changes in episodic memory. Dr. Gabie Smith received her B.A. degree in Psychology from North Carolina State University, her M.S. from Wake Forest University and her Ph.D. from Iowa State University in Social-Health Psychology. Her academic interests include health psychology, research methods, human sexuality and gender issues. Dr. Smith conducts research in several areas within health psychology, including the influence of personality on risk perceptions and health risk behaviors, and the effect of illness and patient characteristics on social attitudes toward patients. Dr. Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler received her B.A. from Wake Forest University and her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from North Carolina State University. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in early intervention at Frank Porter Graham CDC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Before coming to Elon, Dr. Vandermaas-Peeler taught at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and at the University of the South. Her areas of expertise and interest include topics related to children's development in sociocultural context, with a particular focus on parental guidance and family relationships. Dr. Linda Wilmshurst received her BA and MA in Psychology from the University of Windsor and her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. Linda is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology (ABBP) and a licensed School Psychologist. Her academic interests are in the areas of developmental psychopathology and the application of psychological principles in the school environment. Research interests include: children’s worries; attention deficit disorder (in children and college students); the development of social skills through community recreation programs and internalizing disorders (anxiety, depression, somatic complaints) in children. Professors Emeriti Dr. Seena Granowsky, Professor Emeritus, received her B.S. from Tufts University in Psychology, her M.S. from Vassar in Psychology/Child Development and her Ed.D. from Duke University in Educational/School Psychology. Dr. Granowsky’s academic interests include Women’s Studies and the Psychology of Exceptionality. Her research interests include adolescent female development, aging and gender issues. Contact Dr. Granowsky. Dr. James Pickens, Professor Emeritus, received his B.A. in Psychology from The Ohio State University and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. His academic interests include psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology, research methods and the psychology of nonviolence. His research interests include the study of attitudes and behaviors associated with violent and nonviolent approaches to problems, and computer applications for conducting laboratories. Contact Dr. Pickens. Visiting Professors Dr. Corinne Auman received her B.A. from Elon College and her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from North Carolina State University. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development at Duke University Medical Center. Her academic interests include social-cognitive changes related to aging, stereotypes, and intergenerational relationships. Dr. Auman's current research focuses on the cognitive functioning of older adults in retirement communities. Contact Dr. Auman. Dr. Mark Prokosch received a B.S. degree from University of New Mexico and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from University of California, Davis in Psychobiology. His general interests concern the ways in which humans' current psychological design is a product of evolutionary selection. His research intersects with many different areas of psychology including biological psychology, social psychology, and cognitive psychology. His current research interests includes work on human mutual mate choice and sexual selection theory, preferences for human mental traits such as intelligence and creativity, and analysis of how individual differences in intelligence and creativity influence preferences. Also, he studies mental traits as potential fitness indicators and studies ovulatory effects on female mate preferences.
