Project title: "Everyday Odyssey": The composition and staging of a play that explores the struggles of Odysseus's family in his absence
The large majority of my energy this semester was dedicated to archiving my project. After meeting with Dr. Cahill and Katie Nash (Elon archivist), I was informed that my proposed submission to Elon archives was too large, and as a result of this ongoing discussion, have spent the semester working with Fred to decide what items would be most valuable to the future Elon scholarly community, and then compiling those items into one, four inch notebook for the convenience of the archives. After completing this final reflection, I will complete my last video journal reflecting on the entirety of this year, then store both in the Everyday Odyssey archive binder, and then discuss with Dr. Cahill the best time/place to hand over the project binder, which represents a culmination of my intellectual efforts during my academic career at Elon.
As far as other activities this semester, I applied for bridges in LA for the purpose of facilitating my transition into post-graduate life, but decided to withdraw myself from participation in the program when it became clear that my life/career inclinations were leaning steadily towards NYC. I also submitted the necessary paperwork to College Fellows (i.e. a progress report, and finally the production draft of Story of Home), and continued (and will keep) researching graduate schools, fellowships, and festivals to apply to in the months/years to come. Moreover, I prepared a rather fetching poster for the May 3rd Lumen poster presentation, but did not present it as I had to audition for a bi-coastal agent that day.
Having an opportunity to work in depth as a playwright in the course of completing my Lumen project confirmed all the more my love of storytelling in any capacity, but made especially apparent my fondness for writing and/or acting in original works. There’s nothing that even comes close to being the originator of a story, or a character, especially one born out of an age-old tale/idea, and as a result of doing all of these via my Lumen, I now find myself hungrily searching for theaters, film-markets, and/or locals where original works are the heart and soul. Areas like Chicago, and London, and theaters like the O’Neill and Steppenwolf particularly peak my interest because of their willingness to embrace and kindle new works. In light of this, I only just earlier this week auditioned for the three original musicals and eight original plays being staged at the O’Neill this summer, and am actively trying to devise a way to work in London in the course of the next year. Moreover, studying abroad in Greece allowed me to form a bond with our tour guide, Smaro, with whom I’ve kept in contact since and plan to ask for help in arranging another visit to Greece wherein I could do preparatory research for the second and third in the trilogy of plays (Story of Home being the first) I plan to write reimagining the story of The Odyssey from other character’s perspectives.
