Sarah Williams, Assistant Director of the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement

Hi! My name is Sarah Williams and I am the Assistant Director for The Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement where I’ve had the pleasure to work with this year’s awardee through her role in our office. I am excited to announce that this year’s Iris Holt McEwen Community Service Award goes to Ashley Billie. Not only does she excel in academics, but she is training to pursue a profession where she can leave a positive impact on the world through her major in English with a Teacher Licensure focus and a concentration in Nonprofit Leadership. Ashley’s service and concern for others extends beyond her academics through her extensive community engagement. She has served as a mentor and educator for students in our county through tutoring with the Village Project and in placements at Cummings High School, Alamance Community College, Williams High School, and Highland Elementary. In addition, Ashley serves our campus in roles such as an RA in the Education LLC, President of her sorority Zeta Phi Beta, and with Elon Volunteers! as an Alternative Spring Break coordinator and Director of the social issue cluster for Disability Rights.

Ashley does all of her work with a lens toward diversity and inclusion which she has a passion for and has developed through her role as a Diversity Ambassador Guide with Elon University Admissions, her undergraduate research focusing on cultural competency in teacher candidates, and in her support as an organizing assistant for the Adjunct Faculty Union. As you can tell, in so many ways, Ashley has already left a positive and lasting impression upon our campus, community, and beyond, and I have no doubt that she will continue to do so through her professional and personal endeavors. Please join me in congratulating Ashley Billie on her selection for the Iris Holt McEwen Community Service Award!
