Colin Donohue, Director of School of Communication Student Engagement and Alumni Affairs, and Instructor in Journalism
Hello, I’m Colin Donohue. I’m the School of Communications Director of Student Engagement and Alumni Relations and an instructor of journalism. And, having said my title in full, I feel like I’m out of time. But, we’ll power through anyway. The student media award is given to the student who has done the most to advance the student media on campus during the current academic year. This year, the award goes to Anton Delgado, a journalism and international studies double major and the current managing editor of The Pendulum. He is incredibly deserving of this honor. But don’t take my word for it. Kelly.
Kelly Furnas, Lecturer in Journalism
The first time I met Anton was his freshman year after he had written a not-so-great story that had been published in The Pendulum. Look, I can already tell he’s rolling his eyes as I tell this. So I like to think I was offering constructive criticism, but the way he retells the story, I just tore him to pieces. Okay, so the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but the fact that’s not debatable is what happened next: Anton came back. You know, when students ask what it takes to be a great journalist, I think instructors or professionals will answer with two attributes: curiosity and work ethic. And Anton is unmatched in both of those. But I think there’s a third attribute that’s often overlooked, and that’s grit. And whether it’s the determination to get a hold of a source, or the dedication to make sure his staff is performing at its peak, or the perseverance to come back to work after being berated by an advisor, Anton has about as much grit as any student, as anyone I know.

Hey Anton. Congratulations on a really well-deserved award. I wish we were all at Elon celebrating with you, but I hope that these few videos show you just how proud we are of all the work you’ve accomplished. I’m so lucky to have gotten to know you and worked with you at ENN over the past few years. And I want to thank you for continuing to push us to produce such amazing and quality work.
Grace Terry, Student
Hey Anton, I just wanted to say congratulations on the award. I think where your biggest impact is probably through your leadership. You put so much effort into organizing and future planning for The Pendulum, and that combined with your professionalism, I think created a wonderful working environment this year. We’ll miss you in the newsroom, but we know you’ll kill it out there.
