Newman Civic Fellows Award

The Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellows Award is a national award that recognizes students who inspire and engage others through their work to provide long-term solutions for social issues in their communities. This award is made in honor of Dr. Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders, who was a tireless advocate for the role of higher education in preparing students for active and engaged citizenship.

It is my pleasure to announce that Jovani Mendez-Sandoval has been named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact in recognition of his extensive service to the university and surrounding community and his development as a leader.

A Leadership Fellow and an Odyssey Program scholar, Jovani is originally from Raleigh, NC. He has collaborated with the Alamance Chamber of Commerce to facilitate Alamance Youth Leadership Academy workshops for middle-school students to help them identify their leadership potential and learn how to empower others.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program. Jovani will participate in a national meeting in Boston in fall, 2020 along with other Newman Civic Fellows from across the nation. Jovani will also serve as the student representative on the Civic Engagement Council next year. His mentor will be the Director of Leadership, Melanie Bullock.

Please join me in congratulating Jovani Mendez-Sandoval as the 2020 Newman Civic Fellow.
