The Ella Brunk Smith Award is presented to a senior who has made significant contributions to the religious and moral life on campus. This year it is shared by two exceptional students.
Megan Hernandez-Greene is a senior religious studies major with minors in Asian Studies, Anthropology, and History from Dallas, Texas. Megan is consistently mindful of the needs and spiritualities of marginalized communities, thoughtfully finding ways for those on campus who would not otherwise to join religious and spiritual events and festivals to the Truitt Center, including connecting students from the GLC and the CREDE. As a co-leader for the Pine Ridge, South Dakota experience Megan carefully selected materials and connected a diverse group of students from faith and nonfaith backgrounds to focusing on service and a mutual interest in Native American spirituality. She recruited and selected Ripple Conference breakout session leaders and coordinated their contributions. Megan looks at the world through a unique lens and wishes deeply to find ways to honor the religious, secular, and spiritual communities who have been misunderstood or ignored. For Megan’s strong and humble leadership, her interfaith and diversity work and willingness to engage the other and stand in solidarity with marginalized communities, we award Megan Hernandez-Greene with the Ella Brunk Smith Award.
