¡Celebremos!: Graduates Take Flight

To my dear parents,

Thank you for being the main supporters of my dreams and for believing in me and my expectations. Without your efforts and sacrifices, I would not be here graduating with a degree. Daddy—thank you for being my main cheerleader for any path I have taken, especially when we found out that my path was not going to be as a WNBA basketball player. Mommy—thank you for taking me to the library every Saturday when I was little to learn to read in English, and for calming me down when I’m crying because that oral argument in the competition was difficult. What a privilege to have you as parents, I am filled with so much gratitude for you.

To my entire family,

I thank God for giving me a tenacious and brilliant family who have been a fundamental part of my entire growth. You have been a role model of immigrants following and achieving the American dream. Our ancestors are looking at us today with so much pride in what we have accomplished. And even though the road is long and there are many things left to accomplish, I honor you today for teaching me to love anyone as if they were family.

As I stand on the verge of completing a significant achievement, I find it essential to express my deepest gratitude to each of you for being my unwavering support system throughout this demanding, yet rewarding chapter of my life. Their sacrifices, encouragement, and firm belief in my abilities have been the driving force behind my success. Mom, thank you for always being just a phone call away from me to vent. Dad, thank you for your wise advice and always having the answers to all my questions. To my brothers, thank you for all the support you give me, life without you would be very boring. Collectively, they have created a haven of love and encouragement that sustained me through highs and lows. I write to you today with immense joy and gratitude as I share the news of my graduation as a Physician Assistant. This achievement is not mine alone; it is a testament to the unwavering support and inspiration I have received from my family, especially my grandma Kam Nun Choy, my mom Ana Liao, and my aunt Alicia Chong.

Growing up in our unique Chinese-Panamanian village has been the cornerstone of my identity and the driving force behind my pursuit of a career in healthcare. From the warm embrace of our cultural traditions to the resilience ingrained in us through shared challenges, every lesson learned within our community has shaped my journey.

As I stand on the cusp of a new chapter, I carry the spirit of my grandfather with me into the world of healthcare. My education is a reflection of the values he instilled in me since I was very young, resilience, dedication, and a relentless drive to achieve greatness.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to my grandmother who imparted her wisdom, my mother and grandfather who emphasized the importance of education, and my aunt who provided constant encouragement. This achievement is a collective success, and I am proud to represent our village on this momentous occasion.

As a Physician Assistant, my mission is to serve with the same dedication and empathy that defines our community. I hope to make the Chong Liao family proud and contribute to the betterment of our shared future.

I would like to thank my parents and siblings for their never-ending support throughout these last two years. The FaceTime chats and phone calls were always something I looked forward to. I would also like to thank my boyfriend Nicko Patron for being my rock. He spoiled me by allowing me time to study while he took care of everything else around the house. He has been such a blessing in my life, I don’t know how I could have done this without him.

I am grateful to God, who guided and supported me throughout this journey. He has never left my side.

I am grateful to my husband, who always encouraged me to pursue my dream of becoming a Physician Assistant and supported me daily. I am also thankful to my children, who didn’t let me give up on my dream and move to another state.

I am thankful for my 93-year-old mother, who helped me care for my children when I couldn’t.

I am grateful for my classmates and friends who cared for me when I was down with Covid. They prayed for me, brought me food, and sent me the class notes.

I am thankful for the Physician Assistant program staff who worked hard to give us their best and guide us through the last two years. They showed us grace, and they prepared us for the future.

I am grateful to Elon University for opening its doors to me and my daughter, who is in her second year of college.

I thank Dr. Buggs and her team for working hard to celebrate our heritage.

No amount of “thank yous” will ever be enough to suffice for the love and sacrifice you made to help get me here to this moment. I will start with, thank you for allowing me to chase this dream and doing everything in your power to allow me to do so. This is as much an accomplishment to you as it is for me. I am so excited to see what this next chapter holds in store. I am so grateful that no matter what comes, I know I always have you by my side. Your handprints’ are on my soul. Te amaré por siempre!

Que lo que mi gente! Thank you for all the love and support I have received these last 2.5 years that have made my journey possible. I dedicate this degree to the love of my life and the mother of my daughter, Kylie. I would also like to give a special thanks to my Mom, Gregoria, who has always worked day and night to make sure our family has everything we need to make our dreams come true. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my family, friends, mentors and most importantly God. As a first generation college student, the path to get here was not easy. I dedicate every success of mine to my parents because without their hard work I wouldn’t be who I am nor who I get to become.

Les escribo hoy con inmensa alegría y gratitud al compartirles la noticia de mi graduación como Asistente Médico. Este logro no es sólo mío; es un testimonio al apoyo inquebrantable y la inspiración que he recibido de mi familia, especialmente de mi abuela Kam Nun Choy, mi madre Ana Liao y mi tía Alicia Chong.

Crecer en nuestro pueblo unico chino-panameño ha sido la piedra angular de mi identidad y la fuerza impulsora detrás de mi búsqueda de una carrera en el cuidado de la salud. Desde la cálida aceptación de nuestras tradiciones culturales, hasta la resiliencia arraigada en nosotros a través de desafíos compartidos, cada lección aprendida dentro de nuestra comunidad ha dado forma a mi travesía.

Me gustaría agradecer a mis padres y hermanos por su apoyo incondicional durante estos últimos dos años. Las llamadas normales y por video siempre fueron algo que esperaba con ansias. También me gustaría agradecer a mi novio Nicko Patrón por ser mi roca y siempre apoyarme. Me consintió al permitirme estudiar mientras él se ocupaba de todo lo demás en la casa. Él ha sido una gran bendición en mi vida, no sé cómo podría haber hecho esto sin él.
