¡Celebremos!: Graduates Take Flight

I want to thank everyone here at Elon who made this place feel like home during my first two years — my friends, professors, classmates, and everyone who helped shape my experience.

I’m also incredibly grateful to have been part of the Dual Degree Program, which gave me the opportunity to spend the last two years living and studying in Madrid, Spain. Over these past few years, I’ve truly felt like I’ve had two homes.

Back in Spain, I especially want to thank the lads and everyone else who made my time abroad so memorable. The friendships, experiences, and memories I made there are something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.

Lastly, I want to thank my parents for giving me so many opportunities and for always supporting me throughout this journey. I would not be where I am today without their encouragement, sacrifices, and belief in me.

Dear community,
Today, as I reach this important milestone, my heart is filled with gratitude and pride for the place that saw me grow up: Sabanagrande, Honduras. Though small in size, it is immense in values, resilience, and love. There I learned the meaning of hard work, humility, and the importance of dreaming beyond what seems possible.
Growing up in Honduras taught me to value every opportunity and to persevere, even when the path was not easy. The support of my family and my teachers gave me the strength to continue my studies and to believe in myself.
Today, as I celebrate my graduation, I carry my hometown with me in every step I take. I feel deeply proud of my roots and of representing a community full of hardworking people, artisans, and fighters who inspire through their example.
This achievement is not only mine, but also belongs to all of you who inspired me and believed in me. I hope my story encourages younger generations to pursue their dreams and to remember that it does not matter where we come from, but where we want to go.

I’ve been asked a lot recently how I feel about graduating. Without so much as a second thought, I’m quick to respond with “existential.” A looming, deep, and unsettling questioning of my purpose and the meaning of my life. Those that know me well aren’t surprised by this answer. I’ve always been quite the anxious person. But in the deepest moments of those anxieties, I’m fortunate enough to always have two people to turn to. Mami y Papi, a mi edad, ustedes tomaron una de las decisiones más grandes de sus vidas y se mudaron a los Estados Unidos. Sé que fue porque estudiaron muy duro y se les ofreció trabajo, pero me gusta pensar también que fue un sacrificio por los hijos que algún día tendrían. Gracias a ustedes, he vivido una vida llena de oportunidades. Y toda mi vida me han enseñado, con el ejemplo, a aprovechar cada una de ellas, a trabajar duro y a nunca rendirme, incluso cuando las cosas se ponen muy difíciles. Mañana me graduo de uno de los programas de teatro musical más prestigiosos del mundo, y es todo gracias a Dios y a ustedes. Sé que mis ansiedades sobre la graduación y la vida que me espera después no van a desaparecer, pero me quedo tranquila sabiendo que siempre los voy a tener a mi lado. Porque mientras los tenga a ustedes, siento que todo va a estar bien. Los amo con todo mi corazón. Gracias por todo.

Hello everyone,
I feel so many emotions thinking that we are about to graduate and close this chapter of our lives. These four years have given me so much and have allowed me to learn about myself. Being far from home helped me grow, find myself, and better understand who I am, although I know I still have a lot left to learn.
I want to first thank my parents for always believing in me. Your pride motivates me to keep moving forward. To my brothers, Sebas and Nico, thank you for your love and advice; I admire you both very much. To my family, thank you for giving me the best years of my life.
To my friends, thank you for your friendship, for making me laugh, and for every moment we shared, pre-games, lunches, trips, and so many unforgettable memories. You have made this experience truly unique, and I will always carry you in my heart. I am proud of the special group we formed.
I also want to thank my roommate, Nicole, for these three years together. Thank you for your support, your company, and every memory we created. I will miss you so much. Forever my companion.
And I have to mention my singing teacher, Polly Cornelius, and my beautiful pianist, Sharon LaRocco. You have been with me from the beginning, helping me refine my instrument and always seeing the best in me. You taught me the power I have within myself and that I just need to trust myself. I will miss you both so much. Thank you for so many lessons.
Today I can say that I grew up surrounded by incredible people who helped shape me into who I am. I love you all. Thank you for everything, for always being by my side these past four years.
Now, let’s enjoy the closing of this chapter, the end of an era.

To my village –
No llegué aquí sola. I arrived at Elon as a first-generation student from California, carrying more questions than answers, and what I found here were people who helped me find my way, not by giving me the answers, but by believing I could find them myself.
Dr. Crowley, thank you for introducing me to a field that changed how I see the world, and for saying yes when I said I wanted to build something new. Dr. Namaste, gracias por hacerme sentir en casa. You helped me fall back in love with learning and reminded me that who I am matters as much as what I produce. Sylvia, thank you for giving me community when I needed it most, and for always seeing me fully.
Jessie and Sabrina, working alongside you, have been one of the greatest gifts of my time here. You advocated for me, opened doors I didn’t know existed, and showed me what it looks like to be truly invested in someone’s growth. I carry that with me.
To Moseley, to Elon, to every professor, mentor, and peer who poured into me, gracias, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
I would not be the person I am without you. These relationships don’t end here; they travel with me to Madrid and everywhere after.

Thank you to the Seminole Tribe of Florida for helping me go to Elon and letting me pursue my dreams, I can’t wait to return back home with my diploma in hand! Thank you to Austin and his wonderful family for letting me have a home away from home and always caring for me in any way ya’ll can, I am so honored and grateful to have such an amazing partner and friend. Thank you to my grandma and grandpa for caring for me and always supporting me in what I love. I also want to thank my uncle for always humbling me and always making me wake up early when I am home so that I can help him with whatever he needs help with. Thank you to my 10 siblings for being so incredibly silly and always having my back, even when you’re fed up with me. Thank you to my parents for helping me and supporting me throughout my crazy journey here at Elon. Special thank you to my mom for putting up with me and fighting for me to be the best person I can possibly be. I truly would not be here today without ya’ll. Love ya’ll very much.

To my village, a million times thank you. Thank you for believing me. Thank you for pushing me forward. Thank you for being there every step of the way in this crazy journey. Los quiero y los agradezco mucho!

Life is truly a very strange thing. A very wise person named Lily Gooding once asked me why we only stop to celebrate the beginning or the end of things, and not the moments in between. We celebrate new life, we celebrate the life of someone who has passed, we celebrate finishing high school, finishing college—but what if we learned to celebrate the “during”?
Sometimes we don’t realize everything we have until we pause for a moment and look around. Today, I want this to be one of those moments—to sincerely give thanks for everything Elon has given me. It has given me people, memories, and moments that I will carry with me forever.
Thank you to Elon for giving me my best friends, because honestly, I don’t know what I did to deserve you. You’ve made this chapter unforgettable and so special. Friends for life.
Thank you also for giving me this little family in El Centro, because sometimes you don’t need much more than that: good people, genuine support, and a group to share the constant stress of work with. You’ve made these years incredibly special, and I’m deeply grateful for each of you.
And of course, I have to thank my family, because without you I would be nothing. Dad, Mom, my siblings, Grandma, Isa—you are my rock. Thank you for every sacrifice, every piece of advice, every hug, and every time you believed in me even when I couldn’t believe in myself. I love you with all my heart.
Juanma, thank you for your love and unconditional support—I’m so grateful to have you by my side.

Truly, thank you all. I’m so grateful for life, for my people, and for everything this chapter has brought me.

First of all, I want to begin by thanking God for allowing me to make it to this day, for taking care of me, and for never leaving me alone. There are no words to thank Him for everything He has done for me. Although there were moments when I thought about giving up, I always had the support of my parents, Alma and Rosalio; my grandparents, Roque and Maria; my siblings, Leslie and Brayden; and even though he is not physically present, my beautiful little angel, Jason. Their love, patience, and support were my strength to keep moving forward despite all the obstacles that stood in my way. I thank you for everything you have done for me and for how much you have believed in me not only during these four years, but throughout my entire life. Everything I have achieved, I dedicate to you. Thank you for being my reason for being. I love you all so much. I thank God every day for allowing me to be close to you, and I hope to continue making you proud!

I can’t believe the day is finally here, it seems like just yesterday I was getting lost going to class and felt like campus was 10 times bigger than it actually is. 4 years since I said bye to my family, filled with tears and without knowing that these years would come with so much growth, learning, laughs, parties, hugs, and most importantly: friends became family.
The truth is that, in moments like these, all I can do is give thanks. Thank you, parents, for absolutely everything; for working so hard to make it possible for me to have this beautiful experience; for teaching me how to be a better person, and to always give my very best. Ñaña, thank you for always being my best friend, for the long-distance calls, and for always knowing just what to say. To the friends I made at Elon: I cannot thank you enough. Thank you for being my support system, for teaching me so much, and for all the parties, jokes, and meals in the dining hall. Thank you to all my professors for teaching me so much, and for understanding that, sometimes, being late really is just part of my culture. To everyone who makes Elon what it is: thank you.
And now, four years later, with that same lump in my throat, I bid farewell to Elon. Thank you for everything; I love you all very much.

I would like to begin by thanking my parents for sacrificing so much and working so hard to help me get to where I am today. Their dedication, support, and belief in me have shaped the person I am becoming. They have always encouraged me to pursue my goals, even when it required long hours, difficult decisions, and putting my future first. I would not be here without the foundation they built for me.
I also want to thank my two younger brothers. They are a huge source of motivation in my life. Knowing that they are watching my journey pushes me to keep going and to always try to be the best version of myself. I hope that by working hard and staying committed to my goals, I can set an example for them and show them that anything is possible with determination.
To my boyfriend, thank you for being one of my biggest supporters. Moving states away from your family to be with me and support my journey means more than I can put into words. Your encouragement, patience, and belief in me have helped me stay confident and focused during challenging times.
I am also deeply grateful for my grandparents, who have never stopped believing in me and loving me unconditionally. Their support has always been a constant source of strength.
Finally, I want to thank my great-grandmother. One of her biggest dreams was to attend school, but she never had the opportunity. Knowing how much education means to her makes this journey even more meaningful to me. I am so grateful that she has been able to be part of my journey, and I hope that through my education I am honoring the dream she once had.

Today I want to take this time to recognize my family and thank them for the support they have given me throughout my life, but especially over the last four years. The past four years have been the most difficult of my life as I have fought for my career and my wellbeing.
Thank you to my dad for spoiling me without questions or doubts, and for waking up early every day to work to support me. I know you will always be by my side.
Thank you to my mom for showing me what it means to be a successful, intelligent, and dignified woman. Every day I follow her example and think, “What would my mom do?” when I don’t know what to do.
Thank you to my brother for taking care of me and making me laugh when I can’t. Many blessings await you in the future. Don’t change for anyone.
Thank you to my grandmother for always looking out for me and for being like a sister to me. Even if you don’t believe it, you have helped me so much over the past four years just by listening and talking to me. Thank you for teaching me what it means to be a strong, brave, and determined woman.

I also want to thank my Latina friends, the ones who truly understand me and are always willing to support me. The success I have today and all the success that awaits me in the future I owe to God, my family, and my friends.

My village.
The gratitude I carry for every person who has lifted me and guided me toward this moment is beyond words. First, I thank God for placing me on this path and for blessing me with so many beautiful human beings along the way.
I thank my family. My oldest Hermana sacrificed her own education so we could have ours — with no envy, only love, she has always empowered us to chase our dreams. I hope very soon the world makes space for hers. My younger sister has been a quiet, steady inspiration. My mami’s love, kindness, and wholehearted spirit shaped who I am and pushed me to keep going. And my dad, through every hardship and struggle, gave the very most he could to all of us.
Arriving at university was surreal and kind of terrifying. But Sarah, my first-year RA and the first person I met on campus, assured me feel that everything would be okay. Martha became the older sister who gave me strength to keep luchando. Marcus was my emotional anchor for three years. The conversations I had with powerful Latino staff members — MJ, Luis, Norma, and Sandy — were a constant source of inspiration. And Catherine gave me the opportunity to be part of the 3+1 Program, a door I will never stop being grateful for.
My friends have shaped and deepened who I am. The caring, inspiring people around me filled my university years with memories I will carry forever. My roommates taught me the beauty of healthy relationships, and my international friends gave me a new lens to see the world and a deep appreciation of where our culture meets.

To Annie Fernandez: thank you for seeing a spark in me that I hadn’t yet recognized in myself. I likely would not have continued my creative pursuits and fostered my talents had it not been for your ability to make art feel both accessible and essential. Your guidance taught me the value of perspective and the courage to express it, lessons that continue to influence my work far beyond just the canvas.
To my Research mentor, Dr. Sabrina Perkins
I owe a great deal of my academic development to Dr. Sabrina Perkins. Your mentorship has been instrumental in helping me navigate the complexities of psychological research. Beyond just the technical skills needed for data coding and creating as well as presenting a research poster, you taught me the importance of intellectual curiosity. I am deeply appreciative of the time you invested to help me learn and grow. I also believe your high standards are what truly helped me achieve my best results. Thank you for pushing me to be the best version of myself.

Thank you to my family and friends who have supported me throughout my collegiate journey. I couldn’t have gotten through these past 4 years without the love and support shown to me by each and everyone of you. I would like to especially thank my parents, Noelle and Angel, for always supporting me in my pursuit of the arts. I am so lucky to have had you both believe in me and my passion for music. I would not be the person I am without it and without your support. Since I was a little girl singing in the back of the car, you always believed in me and haven’t stopped since. I am the luckiest girl in the world. I also want to thank my brother, Alex, my Titi, my Grandma and Grandpa, and my Nana and Papa for all playing a part in shaping me to the person I am today. I love you all.

Maximus has made a meaningful contribution to both the First-Generation community and the Hispanic community at Elon University through leadership, mentorship, and consistent involvement across campus. As a first-generation college student, he understands the pressure and uncertainty that many students experience while trying to navigate college without family guidance in higher education. Rather than keeping those experiences to himself, he has used them to help others feel more supported and included. He was a great SRA for the First-Gen LLC and used this as a way to support the community.
Within the Hispanic community at Elon, Maximus has been someone students can approach comfortably for guidance, encouragement, and representation. He has participated in conversations that help Hispanic students feel seen on campus, especially students who may be adjusting to a new environment away from home. His presence has helped create a stronger sense of belonging for students who may otherwise feel isolated during their college experience.
Maximus has also demonstrated leadership through service and involvement across campus organizations. He consistently treats people with kindness and respect, and he approaches challenges with maturity and determination. Whether helping classmates, supporting peers through difficult situations, or participating in campus activities, he contributes positively to the Elon community in ways that extend beyond academics.
One of the most admirable qualities about Maximus is his willingness to help others while balancing his own responsibilities as a student. He has shown resilience, professionalism, and compassion throughout his time at Elon. His contributions reflect the values of community, perseverance, and leadership that are important within both the first-generation and Hispanic student experience.
Through his actions and character, Maximus has become someone many students can look up to. His impact on the Elon community comes not from one single accomplishment, but from the consistent way he supports and uplifts the people around him.

Graduating from college has been a dream of mine ever since I was a child, and now it’s so close to finally being a reality. There’s no way I could’ve done it alone. I want to thank the Elon Academy for recognizing my potential during my first year of high school and for supporting my college-preparation journey. Thank you to Odyssey for helping fund my education and allowing me to meet so many amazing people and have so many experiences in different parts of the country. I want to thank my friends for being there through everything, both the good and the bad. You all helped create lifelong friendships and memories, and I can’t wait to see what we all do in the future and where we all go. I’ll miss our late-night conversations and food runs to McDonald’s or Cookout at 3:00 in the morning. Thank you to the staff and faculty who have supported me along the way, reaching out with opportunities I ended up taking or just checking in to see how I’m doing. Really quick, thank you to Qdoba for being my go-to spot and keeping me fed during those long days. I want to give a special recognition and appreciation to my family, who’ve been there for me since the very beginning. To my parents for keeping up with me, checking in on my day-to-day, and constantly wondering where I’ll be the following summer. Sorry for not always answering your phone calls. My grandma for always asking how I’m eating, and for your willingness to always cook something for me. Lastly, my little brother, for constantly making me proud and pushing me to do better. You are all my village, and I’m grateful for all of you for being in my life.

I want to thank everyone who helped bring me to this point in my life. Especially my parents for all the love and support.

My village has never been just one person or one place. It has been built through family, culture, friendships, and the communities that helped shape me into who I am today.
As a first-generation Hispanic college student, there were many moments where I felt like I was figuring things out as I went. My parents immigrated here and worked hard to create opportunities for me and my siblings, even when they did not always have a roadmap themselves. From them, I learned resilience, sacrifice, and the importance of continuing forward even when things feel uncertain. Their support is the reason I am standing here today.
My village also includes the people I found at Elon. From professors and mentors who pushed me to believe in my abilities, to friends who became family, I have been surrounded by people who encouraged me during both the exciting moments and the difficult ones.
Throughout college, I learned that growth does not happen alone. It comes from the people who support you, challenge you, and remind you that you are capable even when you doubt yourself. Every conversation, piece of advice, and moment of encouragement helped me get to this point. I am grateful for everyone who played a role in this journey.

My community… First of all, thank you God for giving me the strength, the opportunities, and the blessing to make it this far. Beyond earning a degree, this journey taught me so much about myself: my purpose and my potential. And a huge part of all of this is thanks to the incredible team of wonderful people I have by my side: my family.
You all are a HUGE part of the reason why I am here today. In those moments when I felt like I could not keep going, when doubt filled my mind and exhaustion felt heavier than anything else, you were there reminding me that I could do it. Even when there was barely enough time, you all always found a way to be present: my mom cooking the foods I was craving even when she hardly had time, my dad waking up early to pick up produce, and my brother using even his lunch break to support me. You never let me fall, especially on those days when everything seemed to start “on the wrong foot.” Thank you for listening to me, making me laugh when I needed it most, and filling me with joy when I could not find it myself. Those are moments I will never forget and will always cherish.
I also want to thank my professors, mentors, and friends. Every piece of advice, every word of encouragement, and every opportunity helped me grow and guided me to where I am today. Even though the best parts of my journey are still ahead of me, I will never forget all the memories we made and will continue making together. Thank you mom, dad, brother, cousins, mentors, and friends. I love you all so much!

I stand here today because of the support and encouragement I received from so many people at Elon. From Elon Academy that first brought me to campus, to the Odyssey program that made my education possible, to the friends who shared this vision with me, to professors who recognized my potential; I am deeply grateful for everyone who was a part of my journey.
I want to especially thank my parents and siblings, with your support, I was able to make it through the toughest of times. Thank you for trusting in my abilities and for always reassuring me that everything would work out.

My village has always been there for me. We may not have been the most emotionally expressive village, but they are always there. When I call with exciting news, they get excited, and when I call down, they uplift me. I am the first in my family to leave the state to attend college. I think my entire village had to adjust to not being all together for the first time in a while, but that adjustment only showed how strong our bond is. My village supports me because they have my back through it all.

First, I want to thank my family. None of this would have been possible without your constant love, sacrifice, and support. Thank you for believing in me even during the moments when I doubted myself. Thank you for encouraging me to keep pushing forward through the stress, late nights, and challenges that came with this journey. Everything I’ve accomplished is because of the foundation you gave me and the values you instilled in me. I hope today makes you proud because this achievement belongs to all of us.
I also want to thank my friends for becoming my second family here at Elon. College can sometimes feel overwhelming and isolating, but you all gave me a place where I could truly feel at home. Thank you for the laughs, the late-night conversations, the memories, and for always reminding me that I never had to go through anything alone. You made Elon feel like more than just a university—you made it feel like a community.
Lastly, I want to thank my professors, mentors, and especially my research mentor for their guidance and support throughout my time here. Thank you for challenging me to grow academically and personally, for believing in my potential, and for opening doors and opportunities that helped shape my future. Your encouragement has had a lasting impact on me, and I will carry those lessons with me long after graduation.
Being part of the Latinx community at Elon has meant so much to me. It’s a reminder that our stories, cultures, and experiences matter and deserve to be celebrated. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who helped me along this journey, and I’m excited to see where life takes us next. Thank you.

More thanks than you would ever know to my Apu, for being a dad that supports me even despite difficult times. Thank you to my beautiful heart for guiding my path. To my parents: I love y’all so much. You wanted me just as much as I needed you. From the moment you met me, you embraced me without hesitation. I was your daughter immediately, but you never tried to change who I was or where I came from. You taught me how to love and how to be proud of being adopted. You made sure I understood that being adopted was one of my strengths and showed me how to use that part of myself as motivation in everything I do. You protected me from any negative comments about our family. You taught me not to take what I was given for granted because it is truly a gift. You always supported my dreams by taking me to every dance class and sitting through every recital and competition because you knew it was what mattered most to me and what kept me going. I am forever grateful for that.
To my friends: Y’all have become my family. You honor and support me in all the ways that matter most. You understand me even when I don’t understand myself. You sit with me and calm me down whenever and wherever I need it. You make me laugh harder than I ever thought was possible. You taught me that I can be proud of myself, but most importantly, you taught me that I am capable of having best friends by my side no matter what.
And to Hortencia: thank you for your decision, because without it, none of this would have been possible.

To my Village,
As I graduate, I’ve been reflecting on what it truly means to have a village. I’ve come to understand that it’s not just where you come from, but the people who carry you, guide you, and stand beside you throughout your life.
I feel incredibly happy, loved, and so deeply blessed by my parents and family. Thank you for always supporting me and for instilling in me the values of hard work and determination. You’ve never just told me to follow my dreams, you’ve made me believe that I can. Because of you, I’ve had the courage to pursue my passions, and I will continue working toward them with everything I have. Any success or happiness I find will always be something I share with you, and with everyone who has taken the time to be part of my foundation.
I recognize that my journey didn’t start with me. I am the product of hardworking people whose sacrifices and determination made this moment possible. I carry that with me in everything I do, both within this campus and beyond it. Because of that, I feel a responsibility not only to succeed, but to give back and share those same values, and to uplift others the way I have been uplifted by my culture and my village.

From the bottom of my heart, I am grateful to everyone who has helped me get to where I am today. First and foremost, I thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to study here at Elon University and to make this dream a reality.
I want to thank my family—first, my dad, who always gives me advice. He has given me the strength to keep moving forward and has been a great father to me. I also thank my mom because since I was a child, she has always motivated me to be a better person and to reach the highest goals. To my brother and my sister, I thank you because you have always been there to listen to me and because you have inspired me to be a better brother and a role model for you. My family is everything to me, and even though they are three hours away from Elon, I always carry them in my heart, and they have been my greatest support.
To my mentors here and afar, I thank you all for giving me guidance when I wasn’t sure how to proceed in pursuing higher education and through the difficult moments in my journey here. Likewise, I want to thank the Odyssey Program immensely for giving me the opportunity to pursue both my Bachelor’s and Master’s through their scholarship program and for the community of peers they have built here.
To my friends, my LUL brothers, and everyone who has made my college experience so meaningful, I thank you all for standing by me throughout this incredible journey. I never knew what to expect from Elon, but it has become a second home to me, filled with incredible memories I will cherish forever.

To my village,
When I think about the word “village,” I don’t just think about a place; I think about all of you. I think about the people who have stood beside me, guided me, challenged me, and loved me in ways both loud and quiet. You have shaped me into the person I am still becoming.
To my family, thank you for being my foundation. For every sacrifice, every late night, every word of encouragement, you made it possible for me to be here today. You believed in me even when I was unsure of myself, and that belief carried me further than you know. There were moments when things felt overwhelming. But in those moments, I thought of you. I thought of the values you instilled in me; respect, humility, and the importance of never giving up. And because of that, I kept going.
This accomplishment is not mine alone. It belongs to all of us. Every lesson you taught me, every conversation we shared, every moment of support is woven into this achievement.
I carry your love and your sacrifices with me in everything I do. And as I move forward, I hope to make you proud, not just through what I accomplish, but through the person I continue to be.

Dear my family,
I am the second person in our family to graduate from college. Each of your stories keeps me going during the late nights and the long hours of studying. You all have been through the devastations and setbacks right there with me. I can not thank each of you enough for all the support and love you have given me throughout the last 4 years and for many years before that. Bello, you gave me my love of asking questions and always wanting to learn. Bella, you gave me the ability to think creatively to solve even the hardest problems. Finally, Mami, you have given me the world and taught me I could do anything with it. I love you so much and could not be more proud to be a part of our family. I am grateful to have you and can’t wait to make each of you even more proud.

Thank you to my family for their support and unconditional love. Thank you to all my friends for the jokes and all the memories. These four years have been incredible. I love you all!

Today I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been part of my journey. Getting here has not been easy, but thanks to the support of programs like Odyssey and Golden Door Scholars, I have been able to overcome obstacles and continue pursuing my goals.
Odyssey not only provided me with academic support, but also a sense of belonging and a network of people who truly believe in my potential. Golden Door Scholars, on the other hand, opened doors that once seemed out of reach, giving me opportunities that have changed my life and my family’s life.
To my family, thank you for your sacrifice, love, and trust in me even in the most difficult moments. To my mentors, professors, and friends, thank you for guiding me, supporting me, and reminding me that I am capable of achieving great things.

I moved here from Germany not knowing exactly what to expect, but being bilingual and having Mexican roots changed everything for me at Elon. Speaking Spanish helped me find my closest friends and a community that felt like home, even when I was thousands of miles away from mine.
To my family: thank you for always being there despite the distance. To my friends here: thank you for every single memory. This degree is just as much yours as it is mine.

You have impacted my life in such a positive way. The kindness given to me is something I will cherish forever. With graduate school on the horizon; moving all the way to Boston, I am thrilled to begin this next chapter, but also filled with uncertainty. Today I want to thank God and my family for helping me get to where I am today. This achievement is not just mine; it belongs to all of you who have supported me every step of the way. Mom and Dad, your hard work, your teachings, and your love are the key tools that have brought me here today. From a very young age, you taught me that everything in life is earned through sacrifice, faith, and perseverance. You left your country to give me and my siblings a better future. As the oldest child and the first generation to graduate from both high school and now college, I carry this achievement with pride, but also with responsibility. When we allow ourselves to dream, we achieve great things. I never imagined being here… but I always wished for it. And if I had achieved it earlier, my speech would be completely different. Today, this moment carries much more history. Thank you to my parents for teaching me the value of continuous education. For reminding me that it doesn’t matter where you come from: no school is too small, no village too far away, when there is determination. Mom… the fact that you cooked my favorite meal on my birthdays fed my body and nourished my heart. You gave me security, belonging… identity. Dad… that yellow pen in my first competition motivated me to dream. And your oldies music opened the doors to a language I now love. Thank you to my sisters, for always being just one click away, especially when I couldn’t find meaning among so many scientific articles… and the famous APA 7 format. Thank you to my teachers, for believing in me even when I doubted myself, for pushing me when I seemed to be stopping. Thank you to my in-laws, for so much support. The interviews, the contacts, the projects… would not have been possible without you. Thank you for lending me your son… and your grandchildren, to live this crazy adventure with me. To my children, I want to say: everything is possible. Everything can be achieved. You just have to think it, decide it… and act on it. And to you, my dear husband, the great love of my life… there are not enough words to express what your support means to me. De vuelta en España, quiero agradecer especialmente a los chicos y a todos los demás que hicieron que mi estancia en el extranjero fuera tan memorable. Las amistades, experiencias y recuerdos que forjé allí son algo que llevaré conmigo el resto de mi vida.

Querida comunidad,
Hoy, al alcanzar este importante logro, mi corazón se llena de gratitud y orgullo por el lugar que me vio crecer: Sabanagrande, Honduras. Aunque pequeño en tamaño, es inmenso en valores, resiliencia y amor. Allí aprendí el significado del esfuerzo, la humildad y la importancia de soñar más allá de lo que parece posible.
Crecer en Honduras me enseñó a valorar cada oportunidad y a perseverar, incluso cuando el camino no era fácil. El apoyo de mi familia y de mis maestros me dio la fuerza para continuar mis estudios y creer en mí misma.
Hoy, al celebrar mi graduación, llevo a mi pueblo conmigo en cada paso que doy. Me siento profundamente orgullosa de mis raíces y de representar a una comunidad llena de personas trabajadoras, artesanos y luchadores que inspiran con su ejemplo.

Últimamente me han preguntado mucho cómo me siento acerca de graduarme. Sin pensarlo dos veces, respondo rápidamente: “existencial”. Una sensación inminente, profunda e inquietante de cuestionar mi propósito y el sentido de mi vida. Quienes me conocen bien no se sorprenden con esta respuesta. Siempre he sido una persona bastante ansiosa. Pero en los momentos más profundos de esa ansiedad, tengo la suerte de contar siempre con dos personas a quienes acudir.
Mami y Papi, a mi edad ustedes tomaron una de las decisiones más grandes de sus vidas y se mudaron a los Estados Unidos. Sé que fue porque estudiaron muy duro y se les ofreció trabajo, pero también me gusta pensar que fue un sacrificio por los hijos que algún día tendrían. Gracias a ustedes, he vivido una vida llena de oportunidades. Y durante toda mi vida me han enseñado, con el ejemplo, a aprovechar cada una de ellas, a trabajar duro y a nunca rendirme, incluso cuando las cosas se ponen muy difíciles.
Mañana me gradúo de uno de los programas de teatro musical más prestigiosos del mundo, y es todo gracias a Dios y a ustedes. Sé que mis ansiedades sobre la graduación y la vida que me espera después no van a desaparecer, pero me quedo tranquila sabiendo que siempre los voy a tener a mi lado. Porque mientras los tenga a ustedes, siento que todo va a estar bien. Los amo con todo mi corazón. Gracias por todo.

Siento muchas emociones al pensar que estamos a punto de graduarnos y cerrar esta etapa. Estos cuatro años me han regalado muchísimo y me han permitido aprender sobre mí misma. A mi comunidad –
No llegué aquí sola. Llegué a Elon como estudiante de primera generación desde California, con más preguntas que respuestas, y lo que encontré aquí fueron personas que me ayudaron a encontrar mi camino, no dándome las respuestas, sino creyendo que yo podía encontrarlas por mí misma.
Dr. Crowley, gracias por presentarme a un campo que cambió la forma en que veo el mundo, y por decir que sí cuando dije que quería construir algo nuevo. Dr. Namaste, gracias por hacerme sentir en casa. Me ayudaste a volver a enamorarme del aprendizaje y me recordaste que quién soy importa tanto como lo que produzco. Sylvia, gracias por darme comunidad cuando más lo necesitaba y por siempre verme completamente.
Jessie y Sabrina, trabajar junto a ustedes ha sido uno de los mayores regalos de mi tiempo aquí. Abogaron por mí, abrieron puertas que no sabía que existían y me mostraron lo que significa invertir genuinamente en el crecimiento de alguien. Me llevo eso conmigo.

La vida de verdad es una cosa rarísima. Una persona muy sabia, llamada Lily Gooding, me preguntó un día por qué solo paramos a celebrar el inicio o el final de las cosas y no durante. Celebramos la nueva vida, celebramos la vida de una persona difunta, celebramos terminar el colegio, terminar la universidad. Pero ¿y si aprendemos a celebrar el durante?
A veces uno no se da cuenta de todo lo que tiene hasta que se detiene un momento a mirar alrededor. Hoy quiero que este sea uno de esos momentos y agradecer de corazón por todo lo que Elon me ha dado. Me ha regalado personas, recuerdos y momentos que voy a llevar conmigo siempre.
Gracias a Elon por darme a mis mejores amigos, porque honestamente no sé qué hice para merecerlos. Ustedes han hecho esta etapa algo inolvidable y especial. Amigos para toda la vida.
Gracias también por darme esta pequeña familia en El Centro, porque a veces no se necesita mucho más que eso: gente buena, apoyo sincero y un grupo con quien compartir el constante estrés del trabajo. Ustedes han hecho estos años muy especiales, y les agradezco profundamente por estar.

Antes que nada quiero empezar agradeciéndole a Dios por permitirme llegar hasta el día de hoy, por cuidar de mi, y por nunca dejarme sola. No hay palabras para agradecerle todo lo que ha hecho por mi. Aunque hubieron momentos en el que pensé en rendirme siempre tuve el apoyo de mis padres: Alma y Rosalio, mis abuelos: Roque y Maria, mis hermanos: Leslie y Brayden y aunque no está físicamente presente mi angelito hermoso: Jason. Su amor, paciencia, y apoyo fueron mi fuerza para seguir adelante a pesar de todos los obstáculos que se presentaron enfrente de mi. Les agradezco por todo lo que han hecho por mí y por cuanto creyeron en mí no sólo durante estos cuatro años sino durante mi vida entera. Todo lo que yo he logrado se los dedico a ustedes. Gracias por ser mi razón de ser. Los amo muchísimo, le agradezco a Dios todo los días por permitirme estar cerca de ustedes y espero poder seguir haciéndolos sentirse orgullosos de mi!

No puedo creer que llegó el día, parece que fuera ayer cuando me perdía llegando a clases y el campus se sentía 10 veces más grande de lo que es. 4 años desde que me despedí de mi familia, entre lágrimas y sin saber que iban a ser años de tanto crecimiento, aprendizaje, risas, fiestas, abrazos y sobre todo; amigos que se han vuelto familia.
La verdad es que en momentos cómo estos no me queda más que agradecer; gracias Pas por absolutamente todo, por esforzarse tanto para permitirme vivir esta experiencia tan linda; por enseñarme a ser mejor, y siempre dar lo mejor de mí. Ñaña, gracias por siempre ser mi mejor amiga, por las llamadas a la distancia y por siempre saber qué decir. A los amigos que hice en Elon, no puedo agradecerles lo suficiente, gracias por ser mi apoyo, por enseñarme tanto, por todas las farras, chistes y comidas en el dining hall. Gracias a todos los profesores, por enseñarme tanto y por entender que a veces llegar tarde en serio es parte de mi cultura. A todas las personas que hacen de Elon lo que és, gracias.

Me gustaría comenzar agradeciendo a mis padres por todo lo que han sacrificado y lo duro que han trabajado para ayudarme a llegar hasta donde estoy hoy. Su dedicación, apoyo y fe en mí han formado la persona en la que me estoy convirtiendo. Siempre me han animado a perseguir mis metas, incluso cuando eso ha implicado largas horas, decisiones difíciles y poner mi futuro primero. No estaría aquí sin la base que ellos construyeron para mí.
También quiero agradecer a mis dos hermanos menores. Ellos son una gran fuente de motivación en mi vida. Saber que están observando mi camino me impulsa a seguir adelante y a esforzarme siempre por ser la mejor versión de mí misma. Espero que, a través de mi trabajo duro y mi compromiso con mis metas, pueda darles un ejemplo y demostrarles que todo es posible con determinación.
A mi novio, gracias por ser uno de mis mayores apoyos. Mudarte de estado lejos de tu familia para estar conmigo y apoyarme en mi camino significa más de lo que puedo expresar con palabras. Tu ánimo, paciencia y fe en mí me han ayudado a mantenerme segura y enfocada en los momentos difíciles.
También estoy profundamente agradecida con mis abuelos, que nunca han dejado de creer en mí y de amarme incondicionalmente. Su apoyo siempre ha sido una fuente constante de fortaleza.
Finalmente, quiero agradecer a mi bisabuela. Uno de sus mayores sueños fue poder ir a la escuela, pero nunca tuvo la oportunidad. Saber lo mucho que la educación significa para ella hace que este camino sea aún más significativo para mí. Estoy muy agradecida de que haya podido ser parte de mi recorrido, y espero que a través de mi educación esté honrando el sueño que ella alguna vez tuvo.

Hoy quiero tomar este tiempo para reconocer a mi familia y agradecer el apoyo que me han dado durante mi vida, pero mas que todo, durante los ultimos 4 años. Los ultimos cuatro años han sido los mas dificiles de mi vida mientras que luchaba por mi carrera y mi bienestar. Gracias a mi papa por complacerme sin preguntas o dudas y por madrugar a trabajar cada dia para apoyarme. Yo se que siempre estaras a mi lado. Gracias a mi mama por mostrarme lo que es ser una mujer exitosa, inteligente, y digna. Cada dia sigo su ejemplo y pienso, “que haria mi mama” cuando no se que hacer. Gracias a mi hermano por cuidarme y hacerme reir cuando no puedo. Muchas bendiciones te esperan en el futuro. No te cambies para nadie. Gracias a mi abuela por siempre estar pendiente de mi y por ser como una hermana. Aunque no lo creas, me has ayudado mucho en los ultimos cuatro años con solo escuchar y hablarme. Gracias por enseñarme lo que es ser una mujer fuerte, valiente y de ganas. Siempre los amare. Tambien quiero agradecer a mis amigas latinas. Las que me entienden bastante y siempre estan dispuestos para apoyarme. El exito que tengo hoy y todo el exito que me espera en el futuro lo debo a dios, mi familia, y mis amigas. Gracias.

Mi comunidad,
La gratitud que llevo por cada persona que me ha levantado y guiado hasta este momento es indescriptible. Primero, agradezco a Dios por ponerme en este camino y por bendecirme con tantos seres humanos hermosos a lo largo del trayecto.
Agradezco a mi familia. Mi hermana mayor sacrificó su propia educación para que nosotros pudiéramos tener la nuestra — sin envidia, solo amor, siempre nos ha impulsado a perseguir nuestros sueños. Espero que muy pronto el mundo también haga espacio para los suyos. Mi hermana menor ha sido una inspiración silenciosa y constante. El amor, la bondad y el espíritu de mi mami moldearon quién soy y me empujaron a seguir adelante. Y mi papá, a través de cada dificultad y lucha, dio lo máximo que pudo por todos nosotros.
Llegar a la universidad fue surreal y un poco aterrador. Pero Sarah, mi asistente residente de primer año y la primera persona que conocí en el campus, me aseguró que todo iba a estar bien. Martha se convirtió en la hermana mayor que me dio fuerzas para seguir luchando. Marcus fue mi ancla emocional durante tres años. Las conversaciones que tuve con poderosos miembros del personal latino — MJ, Luis, Norma y Sandy — fueron una fuente constante de inspiración. Y Catherine me dio la oportunidad de ser parte del programa 3+1, una puerta por la que siempre estaré profundamente agradecida.
Mis amigos han moldeado y profundizado quién soy. Las personas cariñosas e inspiradoras que me rodearon llenaron mis años universitarios de recuerdos que llevaré conmigo para siempre. Mis roommates me enseñaron la belleza de las relaciones sanas, y mis amigos internacionales me dieron una nueva forma de ver el mundo y una profunda apreciación de dónde se cruzan nuestras culturas.

Annie Fernandez: gracias por ver en mí una chispa que aún no había reconocido en mí mismo/a. Probablemente no habría continuado con mis intereses creativos ni desarrollado mis talentos si no fuera por tu capacidad de hacer que el arte se sintiera accesible y esencial. Tu guía me enseñó el valor de la perspectiva y el valor de expresarla con valentía, lecciones que siguen influyendo en mi trabajo mucho más allá del lienzo.
A mi mentora de investigación, la Dra. Sabrina Perkins
Le debo gran parte de mi desarrollo académico a la Dra. Sabrina Perkins. Su mentoría ha sido fundamental para ayudarme a navegar las complejidades de la investigación psicológica. Más allá de las habilidades técnicas necesarias para la codificación de datos y la creación y presentación de un póster de investigación, usted me enseñó la importancia de la curiosidad intelectual. Estoy profundamente agradecido/a por el tiempo que invirtió en ayudarme a aprender y crecer. También creo que sus altos estándares fueron clave para que pudiera alcanzar mis mejores resultados. Gracias por impulsarme a ser la mejor versión de mí mismo/a.

Gracias a mi familia y amigos, quienes me han apoyado a lo largo de mi trayectoria universitaria. No habría podido superar estos últimos cuatro años sin el amor y el apoyo que cada uno de ustedes me ha brindado. Quisiera agradecer especialmente a mis padres, Noelle y Angel, por apoyarme siempre en mi dedicación a las artes. Tengo la inmensa suerte de que ambos hayan creído en mí y en mi pasión por la música. No sería la persona que soy hoy sin ella y sin su apoyo. Desde que era una niña pequeña que cantaba en el asiento trasero del coche, ustedes siempre creyeron en mí y no han dejado de hacerlo desde entonces. Soy la chica más afortunada del mundo. También quiero dar las gracias a mi hermano, Alex; a mi titi; a mis abuelos maternos; y a mis abuelos paternos, por haber desempeñado un papel fundamental en convertirme en la persona que soy hoy. Los quiero a todos.

Maximus ha hecho una contribución significativa tanto a la comunidad de estudiantes de primera generación como a la comunidad hispana de la Universidad de Elon a través del liderazgo, la mentoría y la participación constante en todo el campus. Como estudiante universitario de primera generación, comprende la presión y la incertidumbre que muchos estudiantes experimentan al intentar transitar por la universidad sin orientación familiar en la educación superior. En lugar de guardar esas experiencias para sí mismo, las ha usado para ayudar a otros a sentirse más apoyados e incluidos. Fue un excelente SRA para el First-Gen LLC y utilizó ese rol como una manera de apoyar a la comunidad.
Dentro de la comunidad hispana en Elon, Maximus ha sido alguien a quien los estudiantes pueden acercarse con confianza en busca de orientación, aliento y representación. Ha participado en conversaciones que ayudan a los estudiantes hispanos a sentirse reconocidos en el campus, especialmente aquellos que pueden estar adaptándose a un nuevo entorno lejos de casa. Su presencia ha contribuido a crear un mayor sentido de pertenencia para estudiantes que de otro modo podrían sentirse aislados durante su experiencia universitaria.
Maximus también ha demostrado liderazgo a través del servicio y la participación en organizaciones del campus. Trata a las personas con amabilidad y respeto de manera constante, y enfrenta los desafíos con madurez y determinación. Ya sea ayudando a compañeros de clase, apoyando a sus pares en situaciones difíciles o participando en actividades del campus, contribuye de manera positiva a la comunidad de Elon de formas que van más allá de lo académico.
Una de las cualidades más admirables de Maximus es su disposición a ayudar a otros mientras equilibra sus propias responsabilidades como estudiante. Ha demostrado resiliencia, profesionalismo y compasión a lo largo de su tiempo en Elon. Sus contribuciones reflejan los valores de comunidad, perseverancia y liderazgo que son fundamentales tanto para la experiencia del estudiante de primera generación como para la del estudiante hispano.

Graduarme de la universidad ha sido un sueño mío desde que era niño, y ahora está tan cerca de convertirse finalmente en realidad. De ninguna manera podría haberlo logrado solo. Quiero agradecer a la Elon Academy por reconocer mi potencial durante mi primer año de preparatoria y por apoyar mi trayectoria de preparación universitaria. Gracias a Odyssey por ayudar a financiar mi educación y permitirme conocer a tantas personas increíbles y vivir tantas experiencias en diferentes partes del país. Quiero agradecer a mis amigos por estar ahí en todo momento, tanto en lo bueno como en lo malo. Todos ustedes ayudaron a forjar amistades y recuerdos para toda la vida, y no veo la hora de ver qué haremos todos en el futuro y adónde nos llevará el camino. Extrañaré nuestras conversaciones nocturnas y nuestras salidas a comer a McDonald’s o Cookout a las 3:00 de la mañana. Gracias al personal y al cuerpo docente que me han apoyado a lo largo del camino, contactándome para ofrecerme oportunidades que terminé aprovechando, o simplemente preguntando cómo me iba. Y un agradecimiento rápido a Qdoba por ser mi lugar predilecto y mantenerme bien alimentado durante esos días tan largos. Quiero expresar un reconocimiento y aprecio especial a mi familia, que ha estado a mi lado desde el principio. A mis padres, por seguirme el paso, interesarse por mi día a día y preguntarse constantemente dónde estaré el verano siguiente. Perdón por no contestar siempre sus llamadas telefónicas. A mi abuela, por preguntar siempre qué tal estoy comiendo y por su disposición a cocinar siempre algo para mí. Por último, a mi hermano pequeño, por hacerme sentir orgulloso constantemente y por impulsarme a superarme. Todos ustedes conforman mi tribu, y les estoy profundamente agradecido por formar parte de mi vida.

Quero agradecer a todos que me ajudaram a chegar a este ponto na minha vida. Especialmente aos meus pais por todo o amor e apoio.

Mi comunidad nunca ha sido solo una persona o un lugar. Se ha construido a través de la familia, la cultura, las amistades y las comunidades que me ayudaron a convertirme en quien soy hoy.
Como estudiante universitaria hispana de primera generación, hubo muchos momentos en los que sentí que iba descubriendo el camino sobre la marcha. Mis padres emigraron aquí y trabajaron duro para crear oportunidades para mí y mis hermanos, incluso cuando ellos mismos no siempre tenían un mapa. De ellos aprendí resiliencia, sacrificio y la importancia de seguir adelante incluso cuando las cosas se sienten inciertas. Su apoyo es la razón por la que estoy aquí hoy.
Mi comunidad también incluye a las personas que encontré en Elon. Desde profesores y mentores que me impulsaron a creer en mis capacidades, hasta amigos que se convirtieron en familia. He estado rodeada de personas que me animaron tanto en los momentos emocionantes como en los difíciles.
A lo largo de la universidad, aprendí que el crecimiento no ocurre en soledad. Viene de las personas que te apoyan, te desafían y te recuerdan que eres capaz incluso cuando dudas de ti misma. Cada conversación, cada consejo y cada momento de aliento me ayudaron a llegar hasta aquí. Estoy agradecida con todos los que formaron parte de este camino.

Mi comunidad… Primero que todo, gracias a Dios por darme la fortaleza, las oportunidades y la bendición de llegar hasta aquí. Más allá de una licenciatura, este camino me enseñó muchísimo sobre mí misma: mi propósito y mi potencial. Y gran parte de todo esto se lo debo al increíble equipo de personas maravillosas que tengo a mi lado: mi familia.
Ustedes son GRAN parte de la razón por la cual estoy aquí hoy. En esos momentos donde sentía que ya no podía, cuando las dudas llenaban mi mente y el cansancio pesaba más que todo, ahí estaban ustedes recordándome que sí puedo. Aun cuando el tiempo no alcanzaba, siempre encontraban la manera de estar presentes: mi mamá cocinándome mis antojos aunque apenas hubiera tiempo, mi papá amaneciendo temprano para recoger mercancía, y mi hermano aprovechando hasta su descanso de lonche para apoyarme. Nunca me dejaron caer, especialmente en esos días donde todo empezaba “con el pie izquierdo.” Gracias por escucharme, hacerme reír cuando más lo necesitaba y llenarme de alegría cuando yo misma no la encontraba. Esos son momentos que nunca voy a olvidar y siempre voy a apreciar.
También quiero agradecer a mis profesores, mentores y amigas. Cada consejo, palabra de apoyo y oportunidad me ayudó a crecer y me guiaron a donde estoy hoy. Aunque lo mejor de mi camino todavía está por venir, nunca voy a olvidar todas las memorias que hicimos y seguiremos haciendo. Gracias mamá, papá, hermano, primos, mentores y amigas. ¡Los quiero mucho!

Estoy aquí hoy gracias al apoyo y la motivación que recibí de tantas personas en Elon. Desde Elon Academy, que fue lo que primero me trajo al campus, hasta el programa Odyssey, que hizo posible mi educación; desde los amigos que compartieron esta visión conmigo, hasta los profesores que reconocieron mi potencial, estoy profundamente agradecida con todos los que formaron parte de mi camino.
Quiero agradecer especialmente a mis padres y hermanos; con su apoyo, pude superar los momentos más difíciles. Gracias por confiar en mis habilidades y por siempre recordarme que todo iba a salir bien.
Gracias a mis papás, que siempre me han cuidado. Les agradezco tanto su apoyo y cariño. He logrado tanto porque ustedes siempre me apoyaron y siempre supe que no estaba sola. Este logro se lo debo a todo el esfuerzo que han hecho por mí. Gracias a mis hermanos mayores, que siempre estuvieron ahí para mí y me ayudaron a dar lo mejor de mí. Gracias por ayudarme a tener éxito.

Mi comunidad siempre ha estado ahí para mí. Puede que no hayamos sido la comunidad más expresiva emocionalmente, pero siempre están presentes. Cuando llamo con noticias emocionantes, se emocionan conmigo, y cuando llamo desanimado/a, me levantan el ánimo. Soy la primera persona en mi familia en salir del estado para asistir a la universidad. Creo que toda mi comunidad tuvo que adaptarse a no estar todos juntos por primera vez en mucho tiempo, pero ese ajuste solo demostró lo fuerte que es nuestro vínculo. Mi comunidad me apoya porque siempre está a mi lado, pase lo que pase.

Primero, quiero agradecer a mi familia. Nada de esto hubiera sido posible sin su amor, sacrificio y apoyo constante. Gracias por creer en mí incluso en los momentos en que yo dudaba de mí mismo. Gracias por animarme a seguir adelante a pesar del estrés, las noches largas y los desafíos que vinieron con este camino. Todo lo que he logrado es gracias a la base que me dieron y a los valores que me inculcaron. Espero que hoy se sientan orgullosos, porque este logro es de todos nosotros.

También quiero agradecer a mis amigos por convertirse en mi segunda familia aquí en Elon. La universidad a veces puede sentirse abrumadora y solitaria, pero ustedes me dieron un lugar donde realmente podía sentirme en casa. Gracias por las risas, las conversaciones de madrugada, los recuerdos, y por siempre recordarme que nunca tenía que enfrentar nada solo. Ustedes hicieron que Elon fuera más que una universidad; la convirtieron en una comunidad.

Por último, quiero agradecer a mis profesores, mentores y especialmente a mi mentor de investigación por su orientación y apoyo durante mi tiempo aquí. Gracias por desafiarme a crecer académica y personalmente, por creer en mi potencial y por abrir puertas y oportunidades que ayudaron a moldear mi futuro. Su motivación ha tenido un impacto duradero en mí, y llevaré esas lecciones conmigo mucho después de la graduación.

Ser parte de la comunidad Latinx en Elon ha significado muchísimo para mí. Es un recordatorio de que nuestras historias, culturas y experiencias importan y merecen ser celebradas. Estoy increíblemente agradecido con todos los que me acompañaron en este camino, y estoy emocionado de ver a dónde nos lleva la vida. Gracias.

A mis padres: Los amo muchísimo. Ustedes me quisieron tanto como yo los necesitaba. Desde el momento en que me conocieron, me acogieron sin dudarlo. Fui su hija de inmediato, pero nunca intentaron cambiar quién era yo ni de dónde venía. Me enseñaron a amar y a sentirme orgullosa de ser adoptada. Se aseguraron de que yo entendiera que ser adoptada era una de mis fortalezas y me mostraron cómo usar esa parte de mí como motivación en todo lo que hago. Me protegieron de cualquier comentario negativo sobre nuestra familia. Me enseñaron a no dar por sentado lo que me fue dado, porque es verdaderamente un regalo. Siempre apoyaron mis sueños llevándome a cada clase de baile y acompañándome en cada recital y competencia, porque sabían que era lo que más me importaba y lo que me mantenía adelante. Estaré eternamente agradecida por eso.
A mis amigos: Ustedes se han convertido en mi familia. Me honran y apoyan de todas las maneras que más importan. Me entienden incluso cuando yo no me entiendo a mí misma. Se sientan conmigo y me calman en cualquier momento y lugar que lo necesito. Me hacen reír más de lo que jamás creí posible. Me enseñaron que puedo estar orgullosa de mí misma, pero lo más importante, me enseñaron que soy capaz de tener mejores amigos a mi lado sin importar qué.
Y a Hortencia: gracias por tu decisión, porque sin ella, nada de esto habría sido posible.

A mi comunidad,
Al graduarme, he estado reflexionando sobre lo que realmente significa tener una comunidad. He llegado a entender que no es solo de dónde vienes, sino las personas que te sostienen, te guían y caminan a tu lado a lo largo de la vida.
Me siento increíblemente feliz, amada y profundamente bendecida por mis padres y mi familia. Gracias por siempre apoyarme y por inculcarme los valores del trabajo duro y la determinación. Nunca solo me dijeron que siguiera mis sueños; hicieron que creyera que podía lograrlos. Gracias a ustedes, he tenido el valor de perseguir mis pasiones, y seguiré trabajando por ellas con todo lo que tengo. Cualquier éxito o felicidad que encuentre siempre será algo que comparto con ustedes y con todos los que han formado parte de mis cimientos.
Reconozco que mi camino no comenzó conmigo. Soy el resultado de personas trabajadoras cuyas sacrificios y determinación hicieron posible este momento. Llevo eso conmigo en todo lo que hago, tanto dentro de este campus como más allá. Por eso siento la responsabilidad no solo de tener éxito, sino de retribuir y compartir esos mismos valores, y de levantar a otros de la misma manera en que yo he sido apoyada por mi cultura y mi comunidad.
A mi novia, gracias por ser una constante en mi vida. Por tu apoyo, tu paciencia y por estar presente tanto en los momentos cotidianos como en los más importantes.

Desde el fondo de mi corazón, estoy agradecido con todos los que me han ayudado a llegar donde estoy hoy. Ante todo, doy gracias a Dios por darme la oportunidad de estudiar aquí en la Universidad Elon y hacer realidad este sueño.

Quiero agradecer a mi familia primero, a mi papá, quien siempre me da consejos. Me ha dado la fuerza para seguir adelante y ha sido un gran padre para mí. También doy las gracias a mi madre porque desde que era niño, siempre me ha motivado a ser una persona mejor y a alcanzar los objetivos más altos. A mi hermano y mi hermana, os doy las gracias porque siempre habéis estado ahí para escucharme y porque me habéis inspirado a ser un mejor hermano y un modelo a seguir para vosotros. Mi familia lo es todo para mí, y aunque están a tres horas de Elon, siempre los llevo en mi corazón, y han sido mi mayor apoyo.

A mis mentores aquí y en el extranjero, les agradezco a todos por guiarme cuando no estaba seguro de cómo proceder en la búsqueda de educación superior y durante los momentos difíciles de mi viaje aquí. De la misma manera, quiero agradecer inmensamente al Programa Odyssey por darme la oportunidad de cursar tanto mi licenciatura como mi maestría a través de su programa de becas y por la comunidad de compañeros que han construido aquí.

Para mis amigos, mis hermanos de LUL y todos los que han hecho mi experiencia universitaria tan significativa, les agradezco a todos por estar a mi lado durante este increíble viaje. Nunca supe qué esperar de Elon, pero se ha convertido en un segundo hogar para mí, lleno de recuerdos increíbles que atesoraré por siempre.

A mi aldea,
Cuando pienso en la palabra “aldea”, no pienso solo en un lugar; pienso en todos ustedes. Pienso en las personas que han estado a mi lado, que me han guiado, que me han desafiado y que me han amado de maneras tanto visibles como silenciosas. Ustedes me han formado en la persona que todavía estoy llegando a ser.
A mi familia, gracias por ser mi base. Por cada sacrificio, cada noche sin dormir, cada palabra de aliento, hicieron posible que yo esté aquí hoy. Creyeron en mí incluso cuando yo dudaba de mí misma, y esa fe me llevó más lejos de lo que se imaginan. Hubo momentos en los que todo se sentía abrumador. Pero en esos momentos pensaba en ustedes. Pensaba en los valores que me inculcaron: el respeto, la humildad y la importancia de nunca rendirse. Y por eso, seguí adelante.
Este logro no es solo mío. Es de todos nosotros. Cada lección que me enseñaron, cada conversación que compartimos, cada momento de apoyo está tejido en este logro.
Llevo su amor y sus sacrificios conmigo en todo lo que hago. Y mientras avanzo, espero hacerlos sentir orgullosos, no solo por lo que logre, sino por la persona en la que sigo convirtiéndome.

Querida familia,
Soy la segunda persona en nuestra familia en graduarse de la universidad. Cada una de sus historias me mantiene adelante durante las noches largas y las horas largas de estudio. Todos ustedes han pasado por las devastaciones y los obstáculos conmigo. No puedo agradecerles lo suficiente a cada uno de ustedes por todo el apoyo y amor que me han dado durante los últimos 4 años y durante muchos años antes de eso. Bello, tú me diste mi amor por hacer preguntas y siempre querer aprender. Bella, tú me diste la habilidad de pensar creativamente para resolver hasta los problemas más difíciles. Finalmente, Mami, tú me has dado el mundo y me enseñaste que podía hacer cualquier cosa con él. Los amo muchísimo y no podría estar más orgullosa de ser parte de nuestra familia. Estoy agradecida de tenerlos y no puedo esperar para hacer que cada uno de ustedes se sienta aún más orgulloso.

Hoy quiero tomar un momento para expresar mi más profundo agradecimiento a todos los que han sido parte de mi camino. Llegar hasta aquí no ha sido fácil, pero gracias al apoyo de programas como Odyssey y Golden Door Scholars, he podido superar obstáculos y seguir adelante con mis metas.
Odyssey no solo me brindó apoyo académico, sino también un sentido de pertenencia y una red de personas que realmente creen en mi potencial. Golden Door Scholars, por su parte, abrió puertas que antes parecían inalcanzables, dándome oportunidades que han cambiado mi vida y la de mi familia.
A mi familia, gracias por su sacrificio, amor y confianza en mí incluso en los momentos más difíciles. A mis mentores, profesores y amigos, gracias por guiarme, apoyarme y recordarme que soy capaz de lograr grandes cosas.
Este logro no es solo mío, es de todos nosotros. Representa cada esfuerzo, cada consejo y cada palabra de aliento que me ha traído hasta este momento.

Me mudé aquí desde Alemania sin saber exactamente qué esperar, pero ser bilingüe y tener raíces mexicanas lo cambió todo para mí en Elon. Hablar español me ayudó a encontrar a mis amigos más cercanos y una comunidad que se sintió como mi hogar, incluso estando a miles de kilómetros del mío.
A mi familia: gracias por siempre estar ahí a pesar de la distancia. A mis amigos aquí: gracias por cada recuerdo. Este diploma es tanto de ustedes como mío.

Gracias a todos por ser parte de mi camino y por ayudarme a convertirme en la persona que soy hoy. Llegar a este momento no habría sido posible sin el amor, el apoyo y el aliento que recibí de tantas personas durante mis años en la universidad.

A mi comunidad: donde estoy hoy nunca habría sido posible sin ustedes. A lo largo de esta etapa de mi vida, mi comunidad ha sido aquellas personas a quienes he acudido en los momentos más difíciles. Han impactado mi vida de una manera tan positiva. La bondad que me han brindado es algo que atesoraré para siempre. Siempre me recordaron que las cosas mejorarían, incluso cuando yo no podía ver en mí lo que ustedes veían. Ahora estoy viviendo una vida que no pensé que fuera posible. Con la escuela de posgrado en el horizonte y mudándome hasta Boston, estoy emocionada de comenzar este próximo capítulo, pero también llena de incertidumbre. Sé que los tendré a todos detrás de mí, apoyándome desde lejos. Nunca habrá suficientes palabras para expresar lo agradecida que estoy de haberlos conocido en esta vida. Y a mi padrastro fallecido, aunque nuestro tiempo juntos fue corto, gracias por amarme y amar a mi madre. Me gusta creer que, en otra vida, pudiste ver en quién me he convertido.

A mi aldea,
No hay suficientes palabras para expresar la gratitud que siento al reflexionar sobre este camino. A mis padres, gracias por ser mi base constante y por los sacrificios que me permitieron perseguir mis sueños a través de fronteras. Su fe en mí es el combustible detrás de todo lo que hago. A mi hermano y hermana, gracias por ser mis compañeros de vida y por recordarme siempre el hogar que me mantiene con los pies en la tierra.
A mis amigos que se han convertido en familia: Juan Daniel, gracias por ser un verdadero compañero en todos los sentidos. Desde las largas noches trabajando en YAPA hasta navegar los altos y bajos de ser estudiantes-emprendedores, no podría pedir una mejor persona a mi lado. A Nicole y Santi, gracias por los recuerdos que hicieron estos años inolvidables—desde nuestras noches de películas hasta nuestras salidas semanales a Cookout. Esos momentos de risas y comidas compartidas convirtieron un campus en un hogar.
Y a los muchos otros—profesores, mentores y compañeros—que me han impulsado a crecer como estudiante y profesional: cada uno de ustedes ha dejado una huella en mi vida.
Soy el resultado de su bondad, paciencia y apoyo colectivo. Al mirar todo lo que hemos construido juntos, llevo su apoyo conmigo. No estaría donde estoy hoy sin mi aldea.

Hoy le doy las gracias a Dios y a mi familia por ayudarme a llegar hasta aquí. Este logro no es solo mío, es de todos ustedes que han sido mi apoyo en cada paso. Mami y papi, su esfuerzo, sus enseñanzas y su amor son las herramientas clave por la cual estoy aquí hoy. Desde muy pequeña me enseñaron que todo en la vida se gana con sacrificio, fe y perseverancia. Ustedes dejaron su país para darnos a mí y a mis hermanos un mejor futuro. Ese acto de valentía y amor, nunca podré repagarlo. Como hija mayor y primera generación en graduarme de la escuela secundaria y ahora de la universidad, llevo este logro con orgullo, pero también con responsabilidad. Siempre he querido ser un buen ejemplo para mis hermanos, demostrarles que sí se puede, que nuestros sueños no tienen límites. A veces el camino no fue fácil, pero cada sacrificio valió la pena. Todo lo que soy y todo lo que seré es gracias a ustedes. Este logro es para y por ustedes. Los amo con todo mi corazón y espero que estén orgullosos de mi.

Cuando nos permitimos soñar, logramos grandes cosas. Nunca imaginé estar aquí… pero siempre lo deseé. Y de haberlo logrado antes, mi discurso sería totalmente distinto. Hoy, este momento tiene mucha más historia. Gracias a mis padres, por enseñarme el valor de la educación constante. Por recordarme que no importa de dónde vengas: no hay escuela demasiado chica, ni pueblo demasiado alejado cuando hay determinación. Mamá… que cocinaras mi comida favorita en mis cumpleaños alimentó mi cuerpo, y nutrió mi corazón. Me diste seguridad, pertenencia… identidad. Papá… ese lapicero amarillo en mi primer concurso me motivó a soñar. Y tu música oldie, me abrió las puertas a un idioma que hoy amo. Gracias a mis hermanas, por estar siempre a un clic de distancia, especialmente cuando no encontraba sentido entre tantos artículos científicos… y la famosa versión APA 7. Gracias a mis maestros, por creer en mí incluso cuando yo dudaba, por impulsarme cuando parecía que me detenía. Gracias a mis suegros, por tanto apoyo. Las entrevistas, los contactos, los proyectos… no hubieran sido posibles sin ustedes. Gracias por prestarme a su hijo… y a sus nietos, para vivir esta loca aventura conmigo. A mis hijos quiero decirles que: todo es posible. Todo se puede alcanzar. Solo hace falta pensarlo, decidirlo… y actuar. Y a ti, mi querido esposo, el gran amor de mi vida… no existen palabras suficientes para expresar lo que tu apoyo significa para mí. Lo que tú significas para mí. Gracias por tus sacrificios, las noches de desvelo, por las mañanas agitadas corriendo con los niños, por los días de deportes y los paseos escolares. Pusiste tu vida en pausa… para que yo pudiera avanzar. Y hoy quiero decirte, desde tu corazoncito: ¡Es tu turno! ¡Vamos por más!”

Me gustaría agradecer a mis padres, William y Natalie Vizuete; a mis abuelos, Guillermo Vizuete, Joanna y Tony Gott; a mis amigos; y a mi mentora, la Dra. Amanda Kleintop, por todo su apoyo y ayuda a lo largo de mi trayectoria universitaria. No habría podido llegar a la universidad, y mucho menos completar mis estudios universitarios, sin su apoyo y cariño.
