Important: Registration for the commencement celebration is closed and additional guests cannot be added to events.
Class of 2020 Commencement Exercises
Due to evolving COVID conditions and the number of visitors coming to campus without verified vaccination status, the Commencement 2020 ceremony has moved to Under the Oaks at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5 (rain location: Schar Center).
Class of 2020 graduates who are participating in Commencement should arrive at Alumni Gym by 8 a.m. Staff members will assign seating for pre-ceremony announcements and assist with line-up.
The ceremony will begin with an academic processional of faculty and the Class of 2020, followed by a message of appreciation from Senior Class President Noor Irshaidat ’20, the Commencement address from Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and producer Leonard Dick P’20, recognition of the Class of 2020 and President Book’s charge. Names of ceremony participants will be read in alphabetical order by degree: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Participants will cross the stage as their names are read and will receive an oak sapling.
The ceremony is expected to last 90 minutes, followed by a recessional and an opportunity for personal photos outside with family and friends. A brunch will occur immediately following Commencement (approximately 11:30 a.m.) at Lake Mary Nell.
Vaccination Status and Wearing of Masks
To protect all participants and the campus community and mitigate the spread of the virus, graduates and their guests should bring masks to Commencement Weekend and wear them, per campus policy, in all indoor community spaces (except while eating or drinking). Because the CDC continues to recommend masks outdoors in crowded settings, particularly when unvaccinated people are present, all participants in Commencement will also be required to wear masks outdoors at 2020 Commencement.
- Graduates will have an opportunity to be photographed without masks during the ceremony.
- We encourage all in attendance to be vaccinated, as you plan your arrival, please visit www.elon.edu/healthyelon for gathering guidelines and other university policies.
Tickets and Check-in
Graduates can pick up Commencement tickets, a Class of 2020 T-shirt and additional information at the Alumni Hospitality and Information Center, located at the Martin Alumni Center, at the following times:
- 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3
- 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4
Tickets are required for guest admission to the ceremony. Based on the ticket requests made at registration, each participant will receive two additional tickets to the Commencement ceremony. Tickets will be included in the packet distributed at Martin Alumni Center Check-in. Class of 2020 participants need a Phoenix Card or photo ID for verification.
Only participants (the registered graduates) may pick up their tickets and the packet and will be responsible for sharing tickets for the Commencement ceremony or other activities with their guests. Guests may not pick up packets or tickets for any activities or the Commencement ceremony. Friends may not pick up packets or tickets for fellow class members.
Updates for guests attending the tailgate, Saturday evening celebration or Sunday brunch can be made at the Martin Alumni Center Check-in.
Caps and Gowns
Many Class of 2020 graduates received their cap and gown from the Barnes & Noble bookstore in spring 2020. Please remember to pack the cap and gown you already received to be robed and ready for Sunday Commencement. For those who do not have a cap and gown, a limited supply of various sizes will be available at Martin Alumni Center Check-in.
Anyone who is unable to attend the formal Commencement exercises in person can view a livestream of the ceremony at www.elon.edu/live.
