Congratulations to Courtney Guthrie on receiving the Katharine duPont Weymouth scholarship! Courtney is investigating sexual & gender minority students’ experiences in high school sex education via a mixed-method study. She has completed 10 interviews since January and plans for a total of 20+. She is also designing an online survey of college-aged Americans on their sex ed experiences. Her main goal is to better understand limitations of sex education, especially in terms of collective memory of the HIV/AIDS crisis and in exclusion of sexual & gender minority experiences. Courtney believes this group’s experiences are understudied and studies have focused mainly on a small and relatively less excluded subset of the population; she aims to expand knowledge beyond that. Courtney is hardworking and dedicated to this task, and this is interesting and important research that has so far received support from Elon’s undergraduate research program and the Department of Sociology & Anthropology. Congratulations Courtney!
