Each year the William L. Monroe Sr. award is presented to two students who exhibit qualities that Mr. Monroe valued and that were exemplified by his mentors, Dr. John G. Truitt, a local pastor, and W.A. Harper, who was in his 6th year as Elon’s president when Mr. Monroe came here as a student in 1917.  Those values include a friendly attitude, good citizenship, personal growth, and the desire to help others.  This award was started in 1950, thirty-two years after Mr. Monroe left Elon, and this is the 66th pair of students recognized for these qualities.  I have no doubt that Mr. Monroe would be most pleased with this year’s recipients.

Andrew Veilleux is a Business Fellow with a Finance and Management double major and a minor in Economics.  In addition to studying abroad during a winter term in the United Arab Emirates, Andrew completed an internship with Coleman Research in Boston where he was involved in recruiting subject matter experts to consult with the firm’s clients.  Andrew excelled, winning a competition to see who could recruit the most experts and set up the most calls.  Clearly Andrew is a go getter, maintaining a 3.9 GPA, being inducted into the business honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma, and displaying an outstanding work ethic.  As one faculty member notes, Andrew’s contributions to classes and beyond are thoughtful, prepared, positive and a wonderful example of intellectual curiosity.  In addition to his outstanding academic achievements, Andrew works as a student ambassador for the Student Professional Development Center.  In that role, he manages programs, leads marketing initiatives and facilitates presentations.  His supervisor notes that his friendly and welcoming demeanor and professionalism are unmatched.  He has also given his time to work with Safe Rides and the It Takes a Village Project.  Andrew’s recommender concludes that Andrew is a bright, creative, and professional student.

Congratulations Andrew on your award as a 2020 recipient of the Monroe Award.
