Each year the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award is presented to two students and one faculty or staff member. Sponsored by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, these awards recognize college students across the country who put service of others before self-interest. We celebrate individuals here at Elon who demonstrate the highest standards of character, integrity, and leadership in service to others and the community.
One of our recipients this year is Yannick Twumasi, a senior from Washington, DC, majoring in Political Science and International Relations. Yannick is recognized as a servant leader who has humbly led multiple organizations and efforts at the university. He is described as, “a quiet leader who leads from a place of care for his community and the respect for every person.” One of his nominators commented that, “he is not often the most vocal person in the room but his perspectives and opinions are sought-after and respected. His willingness to help others shine is a testament to his confidence, leadership, and character.”
Yannick has been active with student government, serving as a senator, member of the Inclusive Campus Committee, and member of the Elon Neighborhood Coalition. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., serving as president of the Sigma Delta chapter at Elon. He also served as vice president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
In the summers, Yannick has found a way to make a difference in the lives of youth, serving as the director of tennis operations for Kids Elite Sports, LLC.
Yannick is one of those students in our midst who finds ways to make the world around him a better place and to brighten our community with his presence and his leadership.
It is with great pleasure that I present the 2021 Algernon Sydney Sullivan award to Yannick Twumasi.
