Relationship-Rich Education: A Discussion with President Emeritus Leo M. Lambert and Assistant Provost Peter Felten

4 – 5 p.m. EDT
Zoom

Join President-Emeritus Leo M. Lambert and Assistant Provost Peter Felten for a discussion about Relationship-Rich Education. A central premise of their new book for the Johns Hopkins University Press, based on interviews of nearly 400 individuals on 26 diverse campuses, is that as alumni look back on their undergraduate experience, what they will value most about college are the relationships they formed-the people who afforded them a sense of belonging, helped shape their identity, and helped them discern their purpose in the world and the values that are most meaningful to them. The central challenge is that relationships are generally not the principal organizing construct for talking about what matters most to new college students. Instead we fall into the trap of talking to students about college in transactional language-where to go to do what by when-rather than help students think about another type of pathway through college, an intentional journey that is defined by the relationships formed with faculty, staff, and fellow students that hold promise to make the college experience deeply meaningful and even transformational.

Academic Discussion: Meeting the Dead in South India with Amy Allocco

5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. EDT

“What happens when we die?” is a question asked by many of the world’s religions. Most of us have learned that in Hinduism the usual path is cremation, reincarnation, and (eventually) liberation. During fieldwork at Hindu temples in South India, however, Dr. Amy Allocco, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, encountered rituals to invite the dead back into the world to reside as deities in their family’s home shrines. Drawing on her extensive ethnographic research in India, Dr. Allocco will discuss these rituals and explore what social and religious possibilities they create for Hindus in rapidly changing, globalizing India.
