Brief Biography

Bob Martin graduated from Nova University Center for the Study of Law in South Florida in 1977 and was hired directly from law school as a felony trial prosecutor in Janet Reno's State Attorney's Office for Miami-Dade County. He became a Major Crimes Prosecutor, Chief of the Economic Crimes Division and Chief Training Officer for that office. After that he worked as an appointed special public defender. He moved to North Carolina in 1988 and has served Alamance County both as a prosecutor and criminal defense attorney specializing in indigent defense for the past 27 years, with the exception of the five years between 1999 and 2004.

In 1999, with a desire to enrich the counselor aspect of counselor-at-law, he closed his office and enrolled in University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Master of Social Work program. He concentrated his studies there on the subject matters of resilience, flourishing and the budding discipline of Positive Psychology. After obtaining his MSW he worked as a substance abuse counselor for the Mental Health, Developmental Disability and Substance Abuse Authority of Alamance County for two years, and then reopened his law office and has representing indigent defendants in criminal court from an integrative and holistic perspective.  He retired from the practice of Law in 2016 to devote his full time to teaching.

He began his journey of Eastern contemplative practices including Taoism, Chinese, Tibetan and American Buddhism over 25 years ago and has maintained a daily practice of loving-kindness meditation for the last 15 years.  He has studied with Eastern Masters and secular teachers as well as attending seminars related to the Christian monastic tradition of Centering Prayer. He teaches Mindfulness in and around Alamance County

In August, 2016 he began teaching Business Law and Ethics at Elon University and sharing the practice of mindfulness with students on that campus.  He is an active member of the Elon Community Church, United Church of Christ.

Introduced to the practice of formal, sitting meditation at the Engaged Mindfulness Institute (EMI) in 2015, he has logged over 1200 consecutive days in practice as of this writing.  He has been certified as a Mindfulness Facilitator by EMI and is an authorized teacher of the Koru method of teaching mindfulness and meditation
