Avery Craine Powell

With a passion for storytelling and a keen eye for impactful narratives, Avery Craine Powell serves as the associate director of the Elon University News Bureau, where he plays a role in shaping the university’s internal and external communications. Avery oversees and produces content for Today at Elon, ensuring the university community stays informed through timely and engaging stories. He is also responsible for curating and managing the This Week at Elon newsletter. Additionally, Avery contributes to Elon’s media relations efforts, working to connect the university with regional and national outlets while also serving on Elon’s crisis communications team.

Avery previously worked as a content specialist in the Office of University Communications at UNC Greensboro, highlighting the stories of outstanding students, faculty and staff. Before moving to higher education, Avery spent seven years as a broadcast journalist for local television stations in Virginia, Vermont and North Carolina covering a wide range of stories including politics, crime, human interest and spot news. 

Originally from Orange County, Virginia, Avery is happy to call North Carolina home. He enjoys anything pop culture-related, whether it's movies, music, or building his vinyl collection. An avid runner, he loves the many outdoor opportunities North Carolina has to offer.
