Brief Biography

Dr. Gabie Smith holds a B.S.in psychology from North Carolina State University and a Master's in Psychology from Wake Forest University. She completed her doctoral studies in Social Psychology at Iowa State University with a research focus on risk-taking behaviors affecting rural adolescent populations. Dr. Smith's professional interests include enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education. Her research interests relate to the influence of cognitive and psychosocial factors on interpersonal and social dynamics and attributional processes. She is particularly interested in the importance of sense of belonging and meaning-making processes in adapative behaviors, such as effective coping. Dr. Smith has previously served as chair of Elon's department of Psychology and coordinator of the Women's, Gender & Sexualities Studies program. She served as the Dean of Elon College, the College of Arts & Sciences, from 2016 to 2024.
