Research
Cultural Competence in Teacher Education and Preparation (CQS) explores the use of the the Cultural Intelligence Survey (Ang, et al., 2008) in identifying areas of relative strength in preparation and professional development.
Global 2.0 connects students in K-8 classrooms around the world, using technology and literacy skills while developing global awareness. Classrooms in ABSS have been connected to classrooms in Ireland and South Africa addressing identity, culture and stereotypes through shared curriculum, skype sessions, and artifact exchanges.
Qualitative Case Studies (QCS) is a longitudinal study of learning to teach and retention. The project has roots in the Boston College, Teachers for a New Era initiative, originally funded by the Carnegie Coroporation (2004 - 2010) and Ford Foundation (2009-2011). This study, following two cohorts of teacher candidates from their master's program into their teaching careers, now includes eight years of data on twenty-two participants.
Cultural Competence in Teachers and Teacher Candidates is a mixed methods research initiative to assess teacher awareness and cultural compentence as it plays out in classrooms with increasingly diverse K-12 student populations. The project utilizes Ang et al.'s (2007) Cultural Intelligence Survey as a starting point to assess teacher/candidates responses. An additional survey thread is under development to address cultural competence in classroom practice.
Social Justice Vignettes in Teacher Preparation is a mixed methods project, developing and assessing the use of vignettes as a technique for prompting discussion and transformative reflection for sensitive social justice issues in K-12 education.
