Goal

Reflect on the semester, celebrate personal growth, evaluate the mentoring relationship, and create a plan for continued success next semester.

Mentoring skills used (from Peer Mentoring Framework)

  • People skills (active listening, communication)
  • Building supportive relationships (encouragement and empowerment, peer coaching, role modeling, conflict resolution)
  • Navigating campus resources (advocacy, campus engagement, campus resource knowledge, referral skills)

Suggestions

  • Create a reflective, positive environment where successes and challenges can both be discussed honestly.
  • Celebrate progress while helping the mentee see challenges as valuable learning experiences.
  • Make the conversation collaborative—both mentor and mentee should share reflections.
  • End on an encouraging, forward-looking note.

Meeting Outline (45–60 minutes)

1. Begin by reflecting on the semester as a whole.

  • Thinking back to the beginning of the semester, what stands out most about your experience?
  • What has been the most rewarding part of your Elon journey so far?
  • What surprised you about your experiences this semester?
  • What challenges did you encounter, and how did you work through them?
  • (Optional) Rose, Bud, Thorn:
    • Rose: What went well?
    • Bud: What are you still developing?
    • Thorn: What was most challenging?

2. Focus on self-awareness and celebrating progress.

  • What’s something you understand about yourself now that you didn’t at the beginning of the semester?
  • How have you grown academically, personally, or as a leader?
  • What accomplishments—big or small—are you most proud of?
  • Looking back at the goals you set earlier this semester, which ones did you accomplish?
  • What didn’t go as planned, and what have you learned from those experiences?

3. Help the mentee identify future goals and opportunities.

  • What are your priorities for next semester?
  • Are there any organizations, leadership roles, research opportunities, internships, or other experiences you’d like to pursue?
  • What relationships or experiences help you feel connected at Elon, and how can you continue building that sense of belonging?
  • (If applicable) If you’re considering joining a Greek organization:
    • What are you hoping to gain?
    • What values are important to you in a chapter?
    • How will you know it’s the right fit?
  • What are your summer plans (internship, service, research, employment, etc.)?

4. Provide closure while reinforcing continued support.

  • What parts of our mentoring relationship were most helpful?
  • Is there anything you wish we’d done differently?
  • What have you learned from this mentoring experience?
  • What’s one piece of advice or encouragement you’ll carry with you moving forward?
  • How would you like to stay connected after this semester?

Action steps

Together, identify:

  • 1–2 priorities for next semester.
  • One specific goal related to leadership, involvement, academics, or personal growth.
  • One key takeaway from this semester to carry forward.
  • A plan for staying connected (communication method and frequency, if desired).

Closing

Take a few minutes to acknowledge the progress made throughout the semester. Encourage mentee to share something they appreciate about the mentoring relationship and end by reinforcing confidence in the mentee’s continued growth.
