Admissions Process

The Elon DPT program participates in the Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (PTCAS). All applicants applying for the class of 2020 entering January 2018 will apply online using the PTCAS application. To apply, visit

The Elon DPT program accepts applications on a rolling basis starting July 2016. Please submit your application as soon as possible for consideration.

Deadline Schedule for the Class of 2020 (enrolling January 2018)

Early Decision (binding)          August 15, 2016*

Final Deadline (non-binding)      November 1, 2016

Applications submitted in the current admissions cycle are for enrollment in January 2018. 

*Candidates are encouraged to apply in advance of the August 15 deadline in order to allow sufficient application processing time. Additionally, PTCAS requires that Early Decision candidates take the GRE® and request scores by no later than July 31.

Interview Schedule

Interviews are a requirement for admission. Interviews will be held on September 16 (Early Decision), December 2, December 12, January 30, February 3, February 27, March 3 and March 6.

Application Checklist

Completed applications submitted to PTCAS must include the following:

  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies
  • Official GRE scores (Elon's PTCAS code is 7617.)
  • Three letters of recommendation (sent to PTCAS)

Elon does not have a supplemental application.

It is the applicant's responsibility to review the progress of his/her application by viewing Elon OnTrack (click on link and select “OnTrack for Applicants”). The Office of Graduate Admissions emails each candidate their OnTrack username and password about 2 weeks after we receive your application from PTCAS. This allows us time to process your materials and update our system.

Admission Requirements

Evidence of an earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university* or date when degree is expected

  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 for undergraduate work is required
  • Minimum science GPA of 3.0 is required

*Each applicant must complete a bachelor's degree in the United States from a regionally accredited college or university. International degrees that have been evaluated as United States equivalent will not fulfill this requirement. All prerequisites must be completed at a regionally accredited college or university. 

Completion of prerequisite courses

a.    6 Science Courses (3-credit hour course or higher with lab)
The applicant must have 6 natural and/or life science courses selected from the following: Biology, Chemistry, Human Anatomy/Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Pathology and/or Physics.
b.    1 Psychology Course (3-credit hour course or higher)
It is preferred that this course is from the psychology department, but an upper level course from another department may be acceptable.

Notes on prerequisite courses

  • Five of the six required science courses must be complete at the time of evaluation of the application.
  • Grades of 'C' or better are required in each prerequisite course
  • No prerequisite course may be taken on a "pass/no pass" or "credit/no credit" basis
  • Each natural and/or life science prerequisite course must have been successfully completed within 10 years prior to January enrollment.

Official Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) taken within the last five years

  • A minimum score of 1000 (or 297 on the revised GRE taken after 7/31/11) is required for a composite Verbal and Quantitative score. A minimum of 3.0 is required for Analytical Writing score.  

Minimum of 100 hours volunteer or work experience in a health care setting with at least 20 of these hours in a physical therapy acute inpatient care or hospital setting (may be in progress).

Three letters of recommendation

  • One letter should be written by a practicing physical therapist  
  • One letter should be from a professor/instructor who has taught you at the undergraduate or graduate level and can speak to your academic abilities
  • One other recommendation

Must be able to meet the Essential Requirements of Physical Therapy Education at Elon University.

TOEFL scores are required unless English is the student's native language or the language of instruction. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 79 (Internet-based) is required. English translations of transcripts and explanations of grading systems are required.
