The Honors Program at Elon University is a community of exceptional students from all majors. It offers all the best features of an Elon education: challenging courses with strong faculty mentors, exciting research opportunities, exposure to international perspectives through study abroad, and a community of faculty and student inquirers who want to be fully engaged in a rewarding academic experience. For more information please visit the Honors Program website.
The digital collection includes honors theses written by undergraduate students at Elon University from 2007 to the present. The collection is not comprehensive, as some theses were not digitized. However, Belk Library is continually adding newly digitized and newly submitted works. To view the digital collection, click here.
All theses remain under the copyright of the original author. The Carol Grotnes Belk Library only provides online access to theses for which we have received written permission from the author to publish online. Thesis authors may choose to deny online access or allow full public access to their work. All original theses are housed in Belk Library and may be viewed only in the library. Elon University alumni who wish to include their honors thesis in the online collection may email firstname.lastname@example.org.
In 2011, Belk Library began to digitize honors theses for which there was no final electronic document or the electronic version submitted did not match the final print version. Library staff sent out a mailing to all alumni authors of honors theses where permission forms were absent, requesting permission to include their thesis in the digital collection. Theses included in 2007 were digitized first, and the digitization continued in chronological order. Library staff were responsible for the scanning, file maintenance, and digitization guidelines. An IKON DocSend scanning station was used and pages were scanned in PDF format at 300 dpi in black and white or color. Adobe Acrobat Pro was used to perform optical character recognition (OCR) in order to make the content searchable. All digital files are housed on the library’s shared server, which is backed up nightly.
Since 2009, Belk Library has been accepting electronic submissions of honors theses. The library converts each “born digital” submission into PDF format for long-term digital preservation and for ease of access. Current Elon University honors students are asked to submit their electronic thesis as a PDF, when possible. Additionally, each current student is asked to sign a permission form upon final submission of the thesis, with the option to permit or not permit Belk Library to place the work online. Visit the Honors Program website for more information about the Honors Thesis process.
