Understand Markets and Decision-Making with an Economics Major
An economics degree from Elon University teaches you to think strategically about how people, businesses, and governments make decisions. Through hands-on research, data analysis and policy exploration, you will learn to apply economic theory to real-world challenges that shape markets, organizations, and communities.
Elon’s economics program blends quantitative rigor with a liberal arts foundation, helping students develop analytical and communication skills that are valued in economic consulting, public policy, law and business.
Mentorship Turned an Economics Class into a Career Path
When Alexa Rasmussen ’21 came to Elon, she planned to attend law school. After interning for Sen. Elizabeth Warren and declaring majors in economics and philosophy, she thought she was set on a legal path. That changed after a single course — and a mentor who helped her see data in a new way.
While taking Introduction to Econometrics with Professor Steve DeLoach, Rasmussen discovered her interest in coding, analysis, and research. With DeLoach’s support, she began working as his research associate after her summer internship was canceled. Together they examined how microfinance programs affected South Sudanese refugees’ self-reliance and financial stability.
“This project revealed to me my passion for doing meaningful data work,” Rasmussen said. “Learning under Dr. DeLoach allowed me to build my critical thinking skills in ways I had never been able to in my actual classes.”
That experience shifted her focus from law to economics. Rasmussen now works at NERA Economic Consulting, where she uses data to answer complex policy and market questions. She credits Elon’s emphasis on leadership, research, and mentorship for preparing her to thrive in the consulting world.
“Elon puts such an emphasis on leadership and on immersion into different experiences,” she said. “The amount of people who reached out and helped me get into leadership positions makes me more confident in my everyday work experience.”
