In 2024, the Center for Access and Success was awarded grant funding from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation to implement the Beyond 12 Program, a three-year initiative aimed at addressing the critical challenge of college and career readiness. The program will engage middle school students across Title I schools in Alamance County, with participants taking part in monthly sessions at their middle school campuses throughout the academic year, as well as two full-day sessions on Elon’s campus during the summer. The workshops will expose students to valuable college and career readiness content, helping to broaden their aspirations and knowledge about post-secondary education and career opportunities.

Beyond 12 is a comprehensive initiative designed to inspire middle school students to pursue higher education, create a plan for life beyond high school, and increase access to college by providing information about post-secondary education options. The program develops essential college and career readiness skills, encourages students to explore careers they are passionate about, and fosters self-discovery and motivation. In addition to career exploration, the program focuses on building critical life skills, including social skills, self-discipline, stress management, self-motivation, and personal responsibility.

Developed in collaboration with the Alamance-Burlington School System and local school principals, Beyond 12 includes structured experiential learning activities that reinforce academic habits, preparedness, and executive functioning skills. The program’s design accommodates various learning styles, ensuring that all students can thrive and benefit from its offerings.

Further enhancing the program’s impact, Elon University undergraduates will be recruited and trained as mentors to guide and support participants throughout their journey. These mentors will play a key role in enriching program activities, providing individualized support, and helping students navigate the challenges of college and career exploration. Through this holistic approach, Beyond 12 aims to foster a supportive and empowering environment, enabling students to make informed decisions about their futures and set a strong foundation for success.
