Arriving at Elon in 1989, Professor Wonhi Synn quickly became renowned for his innovative teaching and commitment to high-impact learning. His notable achievements include establishing the Student-Managed Investment Fund in 1992, a pioneering initiative that provided students with real-world investment experience. In 1996, Synn led the Love School of Business’ first Winter Term study abroad program, broadening students’ global perspectives in countries such as China and Australia. As the inaugural chair of the Department of Finance in 2010, he revamped the curriculum to align with the CFA Institute, enhancing students’ industry readiness.

Professor Synn’s dedication earned him the Wesley R. Elingburg Professorship in 2016 and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004. His research on sustainable investment strategies and the role of technology in finance has been published in prestigious journals, contributing significantly to the academic community.

Since joining Elon in 2016, Alyssa Martina, executive director of the Doherty Center for Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, has spearheaded significant initiatives. Under her guidance, the Doherty Center partnered with the Sullivan Foundation to enhance social entrepreneurship, providing students with unique, impactful project opportunities. She launched the Elon Innovation Challenge, encouraging students to solve real-world problems creatively and gain hands-on experience. Martina also developed the Entrepreneurship Living Learning Community, fostering a culture of innovation among students in a collaborative residential environment.

In 2023, Martina received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation’s Engaged Faculty & Staff Award, which recognized her dedication to educating and supporting community-involved students and faculty.
