Brief Biography

Deidre P. Yancey received her MS in Counseling from UNC-Greensboro in 2005, and is currently completing her PhD in Leadership Studies at NC A&T State University. Arriving at Elon in Fall 2022, Deidre teaches in the Human Service Studies (HSS) department, where she is also Coordinator for Elon’s Leadership Studies program.

Deidre’s 22 years thus far in higher education have straddled the intersection of academic affairs and student affairs; inclusive of public universities, the community college system, and private universities. Nine years of her higher education career were at NC State University, where she began as an academic advisor in the College of Education, ultimately moving into the Director role for the Student Success and Advising Center.  There, she oversaw undergraduate academic advising for the College, trained new professional and faculty advisors, introduced an advising syllabus, and also developed, taught, and coordinated the curriculum for the ED100 first-year course.

Immediately prior to Elon, Deidre served for seven years at Durham Technical Community College, where she was an Instructor for College Success (ACA 122) and Chair for the First Year Experience (FYE) academic discipline.  In this role, Deidre enjoyed working with a diverse group of students and advisees, and engaged in curriculum management and developing and facilitating training for new FYE faculty.

At Elon, Deidre is excited to be able to teach in two overlapping disiciplines - Human Service Studies, and Leadership Studies. She is also expanding the Leadership Studies Minor curriculum with the development of new leadership course offerings.  Deidre’s approach to teaching and mentoring mirrors her leadership orientation, combining servant-leadership and authentic leadership: empowering and nurturing student growth; and pursuit of genuine relationships that emphasize self-awareness, transparency, and leaning into personal values.  Her current research centers on leadership for the increasingly multigenerational workforce, with a focus on Millennials and GenZ.  Deidre's research interests also include wellness in leadership, and leadership efficacy.
