Timeline & Access

When will I get access to Canvas?

Faculty and staff will have early access to Canvas beginning in early April 2026.

Students will have access to Canvas sometime during Summer 2026.

When will Canvas be used for teaching?

Canvas will become Elon’s official learning management system beginning in Fall 2026 for undergraduate courses and late July for graduate courses.

Will I still use Moodle this year?

Yes. Spring and Summer 2026 courses will continue in Moodle.

Will I have access to both Moodle and Canvas during the transition?

Instructors will have access to Moodle while preparing for Fall 2026 courses in Canvas. After August 2026, instructors will continue to have access to Moodle to backup courses until December 31, 2026.

Students will gain access to Canvas in July 2026 and will keep access of Moodle until October 2026.

When will I lose access to Moodle?

Moodle access for faculty and staff is expected to continue through the transition period, with access ending December 31, 2026. Starting January 2027, only Moodle administrators will have access for archival purposes.

Moodle access for students will continue through the early fall, with access ending in late October.

Getting Started & Migration

How do I get started with Canvas?

You can begin by logging in, exploring your dashboard, and accessing any available courses or sandboxes.

How do I move my course from Moodle to Canvas?

Courses can be exported from Moodle and imported into Canvas.

Step-by-step migration guidance is available on the Prepare Your Course page.

Will all course activities from Moodle transfer to Canvas?

Most content will transfer, including files, basic course structure, question banks, etc. Some elements (such as certain activities or links) may need to be reviewed and adjusted after migration.

Can I start migrating my course right away?

Yes, instructors who are assigned to teach in Fall 2026 should see their courses on their Canvas dashboard. Once you have access to your courses in Canvas, you can begin migrating your content and edit the course at your own pace.

Will there be support for migration?

Yes. Hands-on working sessions, workshops, and individual support will be available to help you through the process. Information and a full schedule of events are available on our Training and Support page.

Courses, Content & Moodle Access

What happens to my Moodle courses after the transition?

Moodle courses will be archived, and you’ll have time now through the end of the Fall 2026 semester to export and save any needed materials.

What if I teach a course that isn’t offered every year?

Course content can be saved and re-used in Canvas. Additional guidance will be provided to support these use cases.

Can I use a sandbox course?

Yes. Sandbox or practice courses will be available to help you explore and build your course. You will have access to one sandbox. You can submit a ticket, if you need more sandboxes.

What happens to non-academic course Moodle sites (e.g. training courses, committee work, etc.)?

Planning is underway to migrate non-academic courses to appropriate platforms. These will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and alternative platforms may be recommended where appropriate. More details about the timeline will be shared during Summer 2026.

Teaching & Features in Canvas

Is Canvas easier to use than Moodle?

Many users find Canvas to be more intuitive and streamlined, particularly for grading, course organization, and navigation.

How does grading work in Canvas?

Canvas includes tools like SpeedGrader that streamline grading and feedback. Additional training will be available to support this.

Can I organize my course so students don’t see everything at once?

Yes. Canvas allows you to structure content in modules and control what students can see and when.

Can I create groups or multiple sections within a course?

Yes. Canvas supports groups, sections, and flexible course structures.

Will my quizzes and question banks transfer?

In many cases, quizzes and question banks will transfer successfully, though some review may be needed.

Does Canvas support HTML or advanced formatting?

Yes. Canvas includes an HTML editor and supports rich content formatting.

Tools, Integrations & AI

Will my current tools (e.g. publishers, Kaltura, Padlet) still work?

Most commonly used tools integrate well with Canvas. We are working to ensure continuity for key tools and will provide updates as needed. Please review the list of tools we’ve integrated and let us know if there’s anything we missed that is essential to your course or department.

What should I expect with publisher integrations?

Canvas supports a wide range of publisher integrations, and many institutions report smoother connections compared to other LMS platforms.

Does Canvas include a lockdown browser for conducting exams?

Canvas does not include a built-in lockdown browser. Alternative solutions are being evaluated and will be shared.

Workload, Support & Expectations

How much work will this transition take?

The transition will require some time and adjustment, particularly for course migration. However, support, training, and resources are being designed to make the process as manageable as possible.

When should I start preparing my course?

You can begin as soon as you have access, or wait until later in the semester, over the summer, or during Planning Week. There is flexibility in how and when you start. Please keep in mind that Elon University will fully implement Canvas as its LMS starting with the Fall 2026 semester.

What if I don’t have time this spring or summer?

Support will be offered during Planning Week and into the fall semester to help you learn Canvas.

Will there be training and support available?

Yes. A range of options will be available, including workshops, drop-in sessions, self-paced resources, and department-level support. Information and a full schedule of events are available on our Training and Support page.

Will there be asynchronous resources?

Yes. Self-paced materials will be available for those who prefer to learn on their own schedule. Check out the “Prefer to learn on your own? Explore self-paced resources” section on our Training and Support page.

What support is available for accessibility and course design?

Training and resources will include guidance on accessibility, course design, and student engagement.
