New to Canvas? Start here!

Step 1: Log in to Canvas

You can access Canvas using your Elon credentials at https://www.elon.edu/canvas

  • Log in using your Elon username and password (SSO)
  • Once logged in, you’ll land on your Canvas Dashboard

Step 2: Explore your Dashboard

Your Dashboard is your home base in Canvas.

Here, you’ll see:

  • Courses you’ve been assigned to teach in Fall 2026 (unpublished)
  • One sandbox or practice course

Take a few minutes to explore your dashboard and become familiar with how your courses appear in Canvas.

Step 3: Try a sandbox or course

If you’ve been assigned a sandbox:

  • Open the course from your Dashboard
  • Explore the navigation menu on the left
  • Click into pages, assignments, or modules

Exploring a sandbox is a simple way to become familiar with Canvas and identify any questions while support opportunities remain available. Nothing you do here will impact your Fall courses.

(If you need additional sandboxes, you can request one from TLT.)

Step 4: Understand your courses

In Canvas:

  • Courses you are assigned will appear on your Dashboard
  • You may need to accept invitations to join some courses

What to expect next

At this stage, your goal is simply to log in, explore, and become familiar with Canvas so you can feel more confident preparing your Fall 2026 courses. Planning ahead is advised, and becoming comfortable with Canvas now can make preparing your courses easier later.

When you’re ready, you can begin:

  • Reviewing how your Moodle content transfers to Canvas
  • Organizing materials for future courses
  • Attending a workshop or drop-in session

You can move into course preparation whenever it makes sense for you.
