Subject: Elon to Begin Transition from Moodle to Canvas
Dear Colleagues,
Over the fall semester and through the winter term, we have taken time to share, listen and reflect on how our learning management system (LMS), Moodle, supports teaching and learning, the work of committees and administrative processes, and how other options might better support our current needs. We are grateful to the more than 125 faculty and staff members and more than 400 students who shared their perspectives through forums and surveys. That input was invaluable to the evaluation process, helping us understand what is working well and where there are opportunities to grow.
Based on your feedback, the university plans to begin a transition to Canvas by Instructure as our next LMS. This announcement marks the start of an effort that will take place over the next academic year in close collaboration with our campus community.
At this stage, a few points may be helpful to know:
- Moodle remains fully supported.
- No action is required from LMS users at this time.
- No change will be made to how courses are taught or delivered for Spring 2026.
Planning for this transition will continue during the next academic year and will be led by Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) in close partnership with academic and IT colleagues. TLT will guide the planning process, coordinate support and training, and share future updates. As details take shape, including a clearer timeline and answers to frequently asked questions that we have been collecting throughout this process, TLT will communicate those updates, with additional information expected before March.
As the transition planning process begins, we want to hear directly from you. We invite faculty and staff to use this Microsoft Form to share questions or considerations related to the LMS transition. These questions will help inform the development of the transition timeline, support opportunities, future FAQs, and communications.
If you’d like to learn more about the evaluation process and what’s ahead, a Today at Elon article provides additional context.
Thank you for the care and thoughtfulness you bring to your teaching, your work, and our students. We appreciate the time and insight our community has already shared, and we look forward to continuing this work together.
Best regards,
Rebecca Kohn
