Associate Professor Cherrel Miller Dyce has completed a second year of participation in the inaugural “Inquiry Initiative” sponsored by the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE). The Initiative was the “first of its kind” collaborative exploration of teacher education practices and research, focused on opportunity gaps in education. Opportunity gaps are defined as the unequal or inequitable distribution of resources and options individuals or groups encounter in schools, colleges and universities, and employment and professional contexts. The Inquiry Initiative concludes its second year of work at ATE’s annual meeting in Anaheim, California, March 27-30, 2024.

Dyce was one of only 72 university- and school-based teacher educators and education scholars from around the United States chosen to participate in the Initiative. The initiative has cultivated and supported collaborative research inquiries across geographic and institutional contexts for the last two years. Some preliminary data has been shared at state, regional and national conferences associated with ATE and in other education-oriented conference venues.

Selected through a blind-review process, representative members of the Initiative are contributing to a special edition of the association’s journal, The New Educator, to be published later this year. The Initiative continues into a third year of work, with the anticipation of pedagogical innovations, research reports and presentations, education policies, and a book based on the work of participants.

The Association of Teacher Educators is the nation’s oldest professional organization dedicated to the preparation of teachers. It aims to promote advocacy, equity, leadership, and professionalism for teacher educators in all settings and supports quality education for all learners at all levels. An individual membership organization, ATE enhances quality teacher education through both exemplary clinical practice and research.
