His recent research focuses on urban affairs and public policy, with an emphasis on comparative state and local environmental policy and management. (A.B. College of Wooster; M.A., Ph.D. University of Wisconsin, at Elon since 1986). Dr. Brumbaugh teaches classes in American politics, campaign management and Latin American politics. His dissertation dealt with political development in Costa Rica, which led him to direct the Costa Rican study abroad course at Elon for the past two decades. He wrote and administered a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to introduce a Latin American studies minor at Elon, and his conference presentations have emphasized experiential learning pedagogies. His research interests include Costa Rican politics and experiential learning in political science. He serves as chair of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.

His specialty courses include offerings in South Asian politics (the Indian subcontinent) and international security. His research interests relate to India's domestic politics, political economy and international relations. He has published articles in Foreign Policy Analysis and India Review, and chapters in edited volumes from Oxford University Press (India's Economic Transition, Rahul Mukherji, ed., 2007; Indian Foreign Policy, Sumit Ganguly, ed., forthcoming). He is currently working on a book to be titled India and the World Bank: The Politics of Development Assistance in an Emerging Power. He serves as reviews editor for Asian Security, a Taylor & Francis Group journal. Previously, he was assistant professor of international studies and politics at the Virginia Military Institute.

She has edited two books on television and democracy: Democracy on the Air and Television and Elections, 2nd edition. In 2006 she published Media and the Politics of Failure: Great Powers, Communication Strategies, and Military Defeats with Palgrave/Macmillan. Collaborating with Elon colleague Dr. Sharon Spray, Dr. Roselle also published (in 2007) Research and Writing in International Relations, a supplementary text for students of international relations and comparative politics. Dr. Roselle is president-elect of the international communication section of the International Studies Association. She serves on the editorial board of the new journal Media, War, and Conflict.

Dr. Sorensen teaches classes in international relations, comparative politics, European politics, and general studies. She directs the Scandinavian study abroad course at Elon, which was taught for the first time during Winter Term 2008. Her research interests include: comparative social policy, issues of poverty, industrial relations, Scandinavian/European politics, impact of globalization (economic, political, cultural, etc.) and gender issues. She serves as the Pi Sigma Alpha advisor. She had an article published in the January 2008 issue of PS: Political Science & Politics titled “The Use of a Middle East Crisis Simulation in an International Relations Course," and co-authored with Dr. Chad Raymond.

Her research interests center around domestic and international environmental policy. She currently edits the book series, Exploring Environmental Challenges: A Multidisciplinary Approach for Rowman and Littlefield Publishing. Her edited works include volumes on climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and wetlands.

Her main teaching and research interests are human rights, international law, European and post-communist politics, democratization, nationalism and migration. Dr. Swimelar's research currently focuses on human rights and democracy in Southeast Europe. In 2006-07, she was a Fulbright Scholar in Bosnia-Herzegovina, where she taught at the University of Sarajevo and investigated how the international community played a role in promoting human rights and conflict resolution in Bosnia. She has recently published an article in the International Journal of Human Rights on the human rights of the Roma/Gypsies in the Czech Republic. She also has a special teaching and research interest in film and politics.

Dr. Taylor teaches American government, research methods, and various upper-level courses in public administration. His areas of research interest include political attitudes and civic engagement. Dr. Taylor coordinates Elon University students partnering with 19 other universities in the National Campaign for Political & Civic Engagement, located at Harvard’s Institute of Politics. He is also the director of the Elon Institute of Politics and Public Affairs, which houses the Center for Public Opinion Polling and the Center for Public Affairs.
