Eric Ashley Hairston, Director of the Prelaw Program and Assistant Professor of English and of Law and Humanities

Dr. Hairston serves as Director of the Prelaw Program at Elon and of the Center for Law and Humanities. In addition to providing close advising and supervision to Prelaw students, he offers research assistance and advice to any Elon undergraduates iinterested in the intersection of law with other disciplines.   He teaches courses in law and humanities for both undergraduates and Elon law students. As Assistant Professor of English and of Law and Humanities, Dr. Hairston bridges the academic and professional space, teaching American Literature, African American and Asian American Literatures, and classical literature, in addition to law-related courses. He is also admitted to the North Carolina Bar. His research interests include classical influences on African-American Literature and American Literature broadly, African American intellectual history, Asian American Literature, American Studies, and law, literature and humanities. As a former Association Dean (assistant dean) at the University of Virginia, he is also interested in issues of academic performance, curricular development, and education law and policy.

Nim Batchelor
Dr. Nim Batchelor, who served as director of the Prelaw Program from 1992 until 2008, provides close supervision and advice for Prelaw students. An associate professor of philosophy, he has been president of the Southern Association of Prelaw Advisors and chair of the Prelaw Advisors National Council. He is also faculty advisor to Elon’s Phi Alpha Delta chapter and to the Mock Trial Team. He completed his dissertation on the philosophy of law, which continues to be his primary academic field of interest.

Dr. Chalmers Brumbaugh, associate professor and chair of the political science department, also works closely with Prelaw students, providing the coordination of internships.

Betty Morgan, Associate Professor of Political Science

Dr. Betty Morgan, director of the Elon Center for Public Affairs, holds a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy from Virginia Tech and a Master's Degree in European Union Law from the University of Leicester in the UK.  Dr. Morgan is a member of the Lithuanian-American Bar Association, the International Law and Society Association and the American Society of International Law. Dr. Morgan's European work involves developing legal internships for students in non-governmental agencies and organizations. These experiential educational opportunities focus on issues of international law, rule of law, and the development of European Union Law.

Dr. Tim Peeples, serves as a liaison between the Elon campus and Law School. He was an original member of the law school feasibility committee, which began its work in the fall of 2002, and a member of the law school dean search committee. Dr. Peeples is also a professor of rhetoric and professional writing, an academic background that has strong affiliations with the central role of both rhetoric and writing in the life of law and lawyers.
