Music theatre alumna honored with prestigious Helen Hayes Award

Barrett Wilbert Weed '11 was recognized for her lead actress role in Signature Theatre's "Cabaret."

Elon music theatre alumna Barrett Wilbert Weed ’11 was honored May 23 at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C., with a prestigious Helen Hayes Award. 

Weed received the award for lead actress in a musical after portraying the vivacious Sally Bowles in Signature Theatre’s production of “Cabaret” last summer. 

This is the first award win for Weed, who was also nominated in 2014 for a Drama Desk Award and a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical for her role in “Heathers: The Musical,” nominated alongside Sutton Foster, Idina Menzel, Jessie Mueller and Kelli O’Hara. 

The Helen Hayes Award recognizes excellence in professional theatre in the Washington, D.C.-area since 1983. The awards are presented by theatreWashington, the unified voice of Washington theatre since the 1980s.
