Geoffrey Claussen, assistant professor of Religious Studies and the Lori and Eric Sklut Emerging Scholar in Jewish Studies, has published an article in the journal Conservative Judaism focused on the legacy of the Musar movement, a 19th century Jewish movement focused on the development of moral character.
The article analyzes the Musar movement’s vision of how a broad range of practices can spur moral development, and it considers how this model might guide contemporary Jewish discussions about what constitutes Jewish practice. The article discusses practices involving text study, music, visualization, introspection, journaling, conversation, prayer, and deeds of loving-kindness, among others.
