25 Years of Purpose & Progress

2024-25 Annual Report

As we reflect on the 2024–25 academic year, the School of Communications has much to celebrate – not only the achievements of this past year, but the enduring impact of a program built on excellence, innovation and integrity.

This year, our school received a powerful affirmation of its mission by receiving full reaccreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. This distinction – held by only 18 private universities nationwide – reaffirms our commitment to high-impact teaching, ethical leadership, and student-centered learning. It tells the world that our graduates are prepared not just to enter the industry, but to shape it.

We also launched our first new undergraduate major in a decade, digital content management, reflecting our responsiveness to a changing media landscape. Elon Sports Vision earned its first College Sports Media Award, and our programs continued to rank among the nation’s best by the U.S. News & World Report, Broadcast Education Association and others. Behind each of our milestones is a dedicated network of faculty, staff, alumni, parents and partners who make our successes possible.

And this fall, we mark a special occasion: the 25th anniversary of the School of Communications. This silver anniversary is an opportunity to honor our founding vision while celebrating how far we’ve come – from a fledgling department to a nationally recognized school preparing students for purposeful careers in communications, media and sport.

To our alumni, thank you for the support and mentorship you continue to offer our students. To our faculty and staff, your work makes all the difference. And to our parents, friends and industry partners, your trust and collaboration help shape a vibrant community rooted in excellence.

We are proud of our past and energized for what’s next. Here’s to the next 25 years of purpose and progress.

Elon Sports Vision breaks through with win

Elon Sports Vision (ESV) captured a milestone achievement this year, winning its first College Sports Media Award at the 2025 SVG College Sports Media Awards. The student-run production team earned top honors in the Outstanding Live Game Production – Collegiate Student Championship category, cementing its reputation as an emerging leader in collegiate sports broadcasting.

“We’re the newer faces in the industry when it comes to high-level collegiate broadcasts, and a win like this shows that we’re not just keeping up – we’re leading in some areas,” said Patrick Cunningham, director of live broadcast production for Elon University Athletics.

Building on that success, the school also earned significant recognition at the 2025 Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts, the preeminent international media competition focused on student and faculty creative endeavors. Elon students captured 11 awards, with standout performances in audio production. Seven of those awards came from the fall 2024 Audio for Sound and Digital Media class, taught by Bryan Baker, director of technology, operations and multimedia projects

That strong festival performance helped propel the School of Communications to its fourth consecutive top-10 national ranking in BEA’s annual school rankings, placing ninth overall in 2025. The school earned high marks across multiple categories, ranking fourth in Film and Video, sixth in Interactive Multimedia and Emerging Technology, and 12th in Sports.

“This ranking is a testament to the exceptional work our students are producing,” said Vic Costello, associate professor of cinema and television arts. “They’re competing with – and matching – the best universities in the country at the BEA Festival of Media Arts.”

Elon design goes global

Ashley Josey ’25 (pictured) earned a Silver Award – the highest placement ever for an Elon student – in the 2025 Graphis New Talent Annual, an international competition showcasing top student work. The communication design major was recognized for a public poster series raising awareness about single-use plastics. Inspired by the UN Environment Program’s Clean Seas campaign, her work encourages action against plastic pollution. Josey also received two honorable mentions, while Hannah Israel ’25 earned two as well.
