The Distinguished University Professor is invested in a ceremony attended by colleagues, present and former students, members of the Board of Trustees, university administrators and special guests.
As a symbol of the honor, the Distinguished University Professor is presented with a stole, designed to be worn with academic regalia. Of maroon satin embroidered with gold thread, the stole features the Elon University seal and Elon’s shield, which was adopted in 2016 and includes a stylized flame-leaf icon. Half of the icon is in the shape of an oak leaf – Elon is the Hebrew word for oak and the college was founded in a grove of stately oak trees in 1889. The other half of the icon is made up of flames, symbolizing the 1923 fire that shaped the history of the institution and sparked its rise to become a thriving national university.
The stole was created with the assistance of Anne Simpkins, associate professor of art, and Carolyn Nelson, university director of design.
