The provost and vice president of academic affairs is the university’s chief operations officer (COO) and chief academic officer (CAO). The provost and vice president manages internal administrative operations of the university and acts in the absence of the president. The provost and vice president provides leadership and direction for the long-range planning process, the annual priorities for action, and the budget, and oversees the following areas:

  • Academic affairs
  • Faculty affairs
  • Inclusive excellence
  • Belk Library
  • Student life

The provost and vice president of academic affairs consults as appropriate with the Office of University Advancement.

As provost and vice president for academic affairs, the specific responsibilities include the following:

  • providing intellectual and administrative leadership of the faculty and academic support staff
  • overseeing the development of the academic program and the assessment of student academic performance
  • recruiting, orienting, developing and evaluating the faculty
  • developing and administering the curriculum
  • supervising the academic support programs
  • developing and recommending the academic budget, in consultation with deans, department chairs and program directors
  • creating a more inclusive and respectful community through awareness, education and respectful dialogue about difference

The Provost’s Advisory Council and Academic Affairs Advisory Council broadly reflect the range of academic affairs at Elon. Direct reports to the provost and vice president for academic affairs include the associate provost for academic affairs, associate provost for faculty affairs, associate provost for academic excellence and operations, associate provost for academic and inclusive excellence, the academic deans of the college and schools, the vice president for student life, and the academic affairs chief of staff. Other members of the councils report directly to an associate provost or dean.
