Elon College receives $150,000 grant from Kirbo Foundation

ELON COLLEGE, N.C. – Elon College recently received a $150,00 grant for its new-state-of-the-art library from the Thomas M. Kirbo and Irene B. Kirbo Charitable Trust of Jacksonville, Fla.

The writing and tutoring center in the $14 million library, which currently is under construction, will be named in honor of Charles H. Kirbo, who was a trustee of the foundation before his death in 1996. Kirbo was an attorney in Atlanta and also was chief of staff for Jimmy Carter when he served as governor of Georgia from 1970 to 1974.

The foundation gives grants to higher education, libraries, hospitals, youth and Christian churches and organizations.

Elon’s new library, which is slated for completion next summer, will double the size of the current facility. The three-story library will feature the latest tools to access up-to-date electronic information in addition to printed materials. The writing and tutoring center is used to teach writing skills to Elon students on an individual basis.
