Five reluctant bridesmaids hide out in an upstairs bedroom, each with her own reason to avoid the proceedings below. As the afternoon wears on, these women discover a common bond in this play, which features mature language and subject matter.

Jack Boger, associate dean and dean of admissions for the law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will discuss the value of an undergraduate humanities education in preparing for law school.

Hafsat Abiola is the daughter of Chief Moshood Abiola, who died in July on the eve of his release following four years of detention by the Nigerian military government. Her mother was assassinated in June 1996.
Hafsat Abiola will talk about the continuing political and human rights crisis in her native country.

Richard D. Simmons is president of Simmons and Son and the former president of The Washington Post. He will participate in a town meeting discussion with students on the growth of the publishing and information industries.

Jean Bethke Elshtain, “Democrary on Trial”

Dr. Elshtain teaches ethics at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School and has been called a “public philosopher” whose principal interest is education of the citizen. Her address will serve as the H. Shelton Smith Lecture for 1998-99.
