Elon College producing cable television show on education

ELON COLLEGE – By producing a local cable television show, Elon College’s education department is reaching out to area residents to provide the latest information on current educational issues.

“Community Classroom” airs every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on Cable Channel 5. The topic of the upcoming show is charter schools. Featured include the principals of River Mill and Lakeside, local charter schools, and Dr. Mike Williams, superintendent of the Burlington-Alamance School System. “Charter schools are fast developing in North Carolina,” said Joanne Chester-Carter, the show’s host and an assistant professor of education at Elon College.

This is the second year that the show has been produced with the assistance of the college’s television services department.

“We started the program to provide information about education to parents so they can make informed choices,” Carter said. “It is another way that members of our education department can extend their expertise into the local community.”

Upcoming shows will look at the recruitment of teachers, particularly minorities and males, and special education.
