Charlotte teacher and coach honored at Elon College

ELON COLLEGE – C.W. Stacks, a physics teacher and coach at Charlotte Latin School, has received the “Hometown Hero Award” at Elon College.

Stacks was among five people who were honored for their contributions to their communities. Stephanie Getter of Charlotte, who graduated from the school and currently is a freshman at Elon College, nominated him. The ceremony was held in November at the college.

Getter said she has been inspired by Stacks’ commitment to service. He is the faculty chairman of the school’s service committee. “He encourages all of his students to volunteer their time and efforts, but he doesn’t threaten them, he demonstrates the rewards,” she said.

Stacks volunteers at Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. He and Charlotte Latin students do a weekly service project at Highland Elementary, a lower-income school in Charlotte.

“It validates your life when you realize you can make a difference,” Stacks said. “When you realize how much you actually get from it personally.

Elon College is a private, four-year co-educational college located near Greensboro, N.C. It has more than 3,900 students from 42 states and 35 foreign countries.
