ELON COLLEGE – Dr. Thomas Reardon, president of the American Medical Association, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, in McCrary Theatre in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts at Elon College.
Reardon will talk about the future of science and medicine in the next millennium. The speech is free and open to the public.
Reardon was named president of the AMA this year and has been a member of the association since 1963. The graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine currently practices general medicine in Portland, Ore.
In 1997-98, Reardon was appointed to the President’s Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry. In 1998, he was appointed to the Vice President’s Quality Forum Planning Commission, which made recommendations concerning the formation of a private sector forum on health care quality.
One of his goals as AMA president is to support efforts to expand health care insurance coverage to more people. “The AMA has long championed the idea that all Americans should have access to health insurance coverage, and we recently joined a coalition of leading medical organizations that aims to achieve that goal.”
Reardon’s speech is part of the college’s winter term 2000 featuring special millennium courses, events and speakers. His appearance also is sponsored by the Voices of Discovery speaker series, which brings preeminent scientists and mathematicians to campus.
