Elon College students to predict what life will be like in Year 2100

ELON COLLEGE – Predicting the future is tricky business, but a group of Elon College students is up to the challenge.
The students, who will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, in McKinnon Hall on the college’s campus, are being asked to predict life in the year 2100. The winter term, which is held during the month of January, features an innovative program of courses related to the new millennium.

Students have been given copies of “The Nineties Look to the Future,” an article written at the beginning of the century by H.G. Wells. They will use the article as a model for making predictions and asking questions about life in 2100, said Russ Gill, dean of arts and humanities who is coordinating the millennium courses.

The special winter term also features individually designed courses, workshops, speakers and other events and activities that focus on issues related to the millennium. This is the first time that Elon has had a special theme for its winter term, which is marking its 30th year.

The millennium courses examine fast-evolving media, look at environmental challenges, survey the past and future of Olympic performances, project future forms of American literature, investigate how immigration has changed American society and use math to predict the future.
