Elon’s social science division hosts forum on family issues

ELON COLLEGE – Faculty members of the social science division at Elon College will discuss issues confronting families during a three-part forum this spring. The forum is free and open to the public.

“We want to cast light on some important issues affecting American families in this new century,” said Rudy Zarzar, professor of political science and forum coordinator.

The forum gives the social science division a chance “to broaden the faculty’s perspective. We want to build a bridge to the community by showing how social scientists are trying to solve human problems,” Zarzar said.
Each session, which features a panel of professors from the political science, psychology, sociology, human services and history departments, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Yeager Recital Hall on the college’s campus.

The first session on “The Future of Marriage” will be held Feb. 16. Panelists are Gary Bailey, human services, Maurice Levesque, psychology, Angela Lewellyn Jones, sociology with Bernard Curry, sociology, as moderator.

The second session on March 13 looks at “Growing up in America: Is America the Best Place to Raise a Child?” Panelists are Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler, psychology, Catherine King, psychology, Larry Simon, education, Laura Helvey, political science, with Jim Brown, history, as moderator.

The final session will be held April 12 and will examine “Families, Communities and Public Policy.” Panelists are Joan Gundersen, history, Chalmers Brumbaugh, political science, Sharon Spray, political science, with Jim Pickens, psychology, as moderator.
