Elon College begins renovations on two buildings

ELON COLLEGE – Two buildings on the Elon College campus are undergoing major renovations this spring and summer.

With the opening of Belk Library in January, work on the McEwen Building, which had housed the library, kicked into high gear this month. The School of Communications will move into McEwen from its present location in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts. The move will provide more space for the school, which has 15 faculty members serving more than 600 majors in journalism, broadcast and corporate communications and film.

Work had already begun on an addition to the building’s south side to house two television studios. The 40,000 square-foot building is scheduled to re-open for the fall semester, said Neil Bromilow, director of construction management.

The renovated building will include two multimedia computer labs, a 12-room non-linear video editing facility, audio productions labs, a multimedia viewing room, classrooms and faculty offices, Bromilow said.

Renovation also will begin this month on Whitley Auditorium to make the building more functional and comfortable. The auditorium, which was first used in 1924 for commencement, will be equipped with air-conditioning and a new heating system will be added. New seating will be installed, and the lobby will be expanded. A bathroom also will be added while existing ones will be renovated. Those renovations will be completed by the fall semester with installation of a pipe organ has been scheduled for January 2001.
