Noted Medical Researcher to speak at Elon Sept. 27

ELON COLLEGE, N.C. – A respected clinical hematologist and researcher will discuss therapies for blood-related diseases in a Sept. 27 speech at Elon College. Dr. John Tisdale, senior clinical investigator of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Bethesda, Md., will deliver a speech titled “Using Bone Marrow Stem Cells to Deliver Therapeutic Genes—A Story of Mice and Men,” at 7:30 p.m. in McCrary Theatre of the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts. The speech, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Voices of Discovery speaker series, sponsored by the departments of Science and Mathematics.

Tisdale’s primary research focuses on developing and improving techniques to deliver therapeutic genes into blood stem cells. These cells can be used to treat a variety of blood related illnesses such as AIDS, sickle cell anemia, or severe combined immunodeficiency disease.
