Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir, Feb. 18

Linda Tillery, twice named Outstanding Female Vocalist at the Bay Area Jazz Awards, will perform with the Cultural Heritage Choir at 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18 in McCrary Theatre, located on the Elon campus in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts.

Tillery’s performance taps into the diverse resources of African-American music, from slave songs to modern jazz. Critics have compared her voice to those of Mahalia Jackson and Aretha Franklin.

“It is this music, particularly the spirituals, which has kept black people alive through slavery, night riders and segregation,” Tillery says.

Tickets are $10 or free with Elon identification. Tickets may be purchased by calling the McCrary Theatre box office at (336) 278-5610. The box office is open between 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The concert is sponsored by the Black Cultural Society, Gospel Choir and Cultural Programs.
