AIDS Memorial Quilt will visit Elon Sept. 20-23

The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display Sept. 20-23 in the Koury Center, located on the Elon University campus. The Quilt, which also came to Elon in 1997, memorializes those who have died of AIDS. The Quilt had been scheduled for an April display at Elon, but the date was postponed until September due to the relocation of the NAMES Project national headquarters from San Francisco to Atlanta.

Over 500 panels from the Quilt, many representing local people who have been affected by AIDS, will be on display in the Koury Center. A local organizing committee is planning details for the Quilt display.

The entire Quilt is the equivalent to the size of 25 football fields and weighs over 50 tons. It has 42,960 panels and 83,279 names, representing approximately 20 percent of all AIDS deaths in the United States.

Over 40,000 Americans contracted HIV in 1998, and it is estimated that at least half of all new HIV infections in the United States are among people under age 25.

The Quilt will be on display from 7 p.m.-9 p.m., Sept. 20; 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Sept. 21 and Sept. 22; and from 1 p.m.-4 p.m., Sept. 23. There is no admission charge.
