Rhodes Stadium opening postponed; Elon to observe National Day of Prayer and Remembrance

Eastern Kentucky University notified Elon late Thursday, Sept. 13 that it is canceling its appearance in Saturday’s football game at Rhodes Stadium.

The decision was made after Eastern Kentucky’s athletic conference, the Ohio Valley Conference, announced it has canceled all games this weekend. The Eastern Kentucky football team was en route to Elon when the decision was made.

Rhodes Stadium will be officially opened at the North Carolina A&T State University game at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22. Formal dedication ceremonies for the stadium will take place at Homecoming, Saturday, Nov. 10, when the Phoenix takes on Georgia Southern University.

Rescheduling of the Eastern Kentucky game is undetermined at this time.

All members of the Elon community are asked to gather at noon, Friday, Sept. 14, at Fonville Fountain for a time of prayer. This observance is in response to President Bush’s call for noontime memorial services and evening candlelight remembrance vigils across the nation for the victims of this week’s terrorist attacks. The service will be led by Chaplain Richard McBride.

The Student Government Association is organizing a candlelight vigil for 8:45 p.m. Friday on Young Commons. All members of the community are encouraged to gather for a time of prayer, music and remembrance. There will be a limited supply of candles, so members of the community are asked to bring their own.
