Disney Teacher of the Year to speak March 11

Ron Clark, named 2001 Disney Teacher of the Year, will share his teaching experiences at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 11 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus. Clark’s appearance, sponsored by Elon’s Teaching Fellows Program, is free and open to the public.

Clark is an East Carolina University graduate who has taught at schools in such diverse locations as rural North Carolina and an inner-city school in the Harlem section of New York City. He will discuss how his students improved test scores and conducted projects that were honored by the president at the White House.

Since winning the award, Clark has written a book, “The Essential 55,” which was originally written as 55 lessons for elementary school students, and includes 55 guidelines for living and interacting with others.

The Disney American Teacher Awards were created to honor teachers nationwide. A national committee of educators nominates honorees in 10 teaching categories. Students, parents, educators and community members nationwide nominated 70,000 teachers in 2001.
