Leadership program includes middle schoolers

Several Elon students and staff members from the Center for Leadership and Organization Development are mentoring 13 local teens from Turrentine Middle School in Burlington Aug. 3-6.

The program, called Leadership Turrentine, gives the middle school students an opportunity to learn about leadership skills and community involvement. The middle school students take part in team building exercises, including a visit to Elon’s challenge course.

The Turrentine students will also learn about the problems and challenges facing the local community, and will then decide on a group service project that they will devote time to during the upcoming school year. Elon students and staff members will help the young students develop a proposal for their project, and the students will make a presentation outlining their project on Leadership Turrentine’s final day.

The program is funded through a grant from Project Pericles, an initiative sponsored by the Eugene Lang Foundation. Project Pericles has challenged ten colleges and universities to provide a learning experience that will “instill in students an abiding and active sense of social responsibility and civic concern.”
