Tuesday August 19th wsa the day for Viruses at Elon. Many users recieved scores of messages that were the results of a virus called “Sobig”
“Sobig” is another spamming e-mail
worm designed to flood networks with traffic.
Please keep in mind that any time you receive a message with an attachment called “Replaced Infected File.txt” This is the result of the e-mail server catching and stripping a virus away before it gets to your local machine.
Because of this stripping of the virus you do not receive the actual virus. All you get is a harmless shell of the original virus. At about 3:00pm Tuesday August 8th, Elon Sytems Administrators discovered a way to block even the shell from getting to the mailboxes. Hopefully this change will stem the flow of unwanted e-mail to the user’s boxes.
