Martin used a timeout during the second half of the game to propose to Christine Fego, an Elon junior from New Milford, Conn., and member of the Phoenix dance team.
Dropping down on one knee in front of a microphone at midcourt, Martin popped the question to his surprised but elated girlfriend. A student-dominated crowd of almost 1,100 roared its approval as Fego said “yes” and the couple shared an embrace and kiss.
Martin, a defensive end on the Duke football team, worked with Assistant Athletics Director Trip Durham on the idea for more than six weeks. There’s no word yet on the couple’s exact wedding plans, but the Phoenix may want to invite them back on a regular basis: Elon won the game, 85-82.
